Watched that again the other night. Still a laugh out loud moment even after seeing it for the 1,000th time.

    another smart-ish reply

    BatN,

I have to agree with Zardoz, you seem to have been assaulted by folk who may disapprove of this look. I don't particularly care for it and would probably not wear it, especially as normal kilt wear, but you were talking about festivals. It IS a dashing look, after a fashion, and if you bear in mind its fantasy-theatrical origins, there is nothing wrong with looking dashing, especially if you have the build for it.

But that wasn't your question, which is probably why you received so many snarky answers. Somehow, I don't think the historical accuracy police have a force any larger than the original kilt police, at least not at the Ren Faire. Just be sure to wear your best swagger, too.

    I think that this:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zZ8_I0-pi-M

is the look that they are trying to depict. It's a very modern stylized version of a general late Renaissance look. That video is from a Renaissance period living history group out of Scotland. They are to my knowledge the only civilian living history group aside from my own. They met us at a Colorado festival a couple years ago and sent us a copy of their DVD, which I would be happy to pass along to you if you would like.

I actually designed a doublet off of that video snippet. It's not quite the same, but I think does have a nice historical look to it. (The antler buttons were a flight of fancy- I had some antler pieces left over from a dirk I made, and decided to put them on instead of using woven chords.)

If you want a fancy-shmancy Scots doublet for Faire & Fest wear, this one is of a historic pattern (and has lace-on/off sleeves):

Wear it with a belted plaid, and you'll be reasonably authentic....

I love those. Only problem I have with them is that they're something that an upper class person would have worn.Everyone wants to be a lord or a lady... or a wench!

Well, then, here's an authentic commoner's doublet - in nice, cool linen!
