    Kilted in College

So, this Wednesday, August 25th, I start College at UTSA (University of Texas at San Antonio). I will be wearing my kilt, a black original Utilikilt.

A friend informed me while she was a student at UTSA, that there was another guy who wore a kilt. However, he only hung out with two other people. They were kind of outcasts.

I will give an update on how the kilt is excepted in a few days.

Good luck. Just remember, college doesn't mean that others are more mature.

Awhile back when I was at SFA in Nac, there was a guy would would were his kilt on occasion. I think for the most part it was well received.

I work now at the big library at UH, and I've caught sight of a few guys wearing more contemporary style kilts - like Utilikilts and such. Actually, come to think of it, last time I was in San Antonio I saw quite a few guys in traditional and contemporary style kilts. So, I'm pretty sure you'll do fine wearing yours at UTSA.

    Good Luck!

We shipped my daughter, who is known to wear a kilt now and again, off to Lake Forest College this past Friday.

...and the college was founded by....wait for it.......

    .....Scottish-Americans!

So I'm now looking for an appropriate tartan for her since she's proclaimed her intention to not let them sweep their Scottish Heritage under the rug.

And the proudly kilted are never outcasts...they are simply independent thinkers of strong character that are avoided by the narrow minded people who envy them!

Mindrop - good luck. Keep us posted.

AA - I started at LFC and only lasted two quarters (5 hours of bridge and 8 hours of TV every day). Hope it's the right place for your daughter.

I'd be a bit concerned that a black Utilikilt in that particular environment might be perceived as some sort of Scoto-Goth (!?!) analogue to a black trenchcoat, especially with you being a freshman (presumably) just out of high school.

Expect to be asked by the ignorant, "What's pierced under the kilt?".

I am not goth, but unforustunantly, teh best color on me is black. White bleaches me even more. I wont be going all black while wearing the kilt.

I just sent in an e-mail to the campus police about knife regulations. I want to carry atleast my pocket knife and hopefully, a sgian dubh, as soon as I get one.

Thanks for the support, I'll keep you posted.

Best wishes to your UK wearing in college. But, excuse me, why do you plan to wear a sgian dubh in connection with a Utilikilt which, after all, has nothing to do with Scottish attire?

    Greg

    PS. I like Utilikilts

I agree with GG here (and also like UKs, though I don't own one).

Good on you for thinking about your local laws & campus regulations!! In California, the sgian on campus would be a felony as, despite being a wee thing, it is a "dirk or dagger" as defined by the California Penal Code. Even a locking-blade folder (under a different section) is illegal on campuses up through high-school level, though at college/university level they're legal. (I'm a security director by day but a martial arts & self defense instructor by night; our art uses lots of weapons, so I need to be able to educate my students about what they can and can't get way with.)

Your mileage will no doubt vary in Texas. Personally, I find it a shame that y'all Texans can't even wear the knife that Colonel Bowie had at the Alamo. . .though being able to easily get a permit for a concealed pistol helps to make up for that.
