New sporran for Thistledown made from 90 year old leather
Hi all-
I've owed Rex a sporran for some time now to replace a sporran he bought from a friend I recommended that never went through. Originally I had crafted a hunter style sporran, but I decided that I wasn't satisfied with the final product and didn't send it...good intentions aside to remake and send, that was like 3 months ago. ANYWAY, there was a yard sale down the street that had items that were stowed in a family home for years and years. One of the items was a satchel that belonged to a great-grandfather who was an accountant in the teens and 20's. It was mildewed, gross, but was still holding together. I bought it for 5$ and spent last weekend reconditioning the leather till it looked almost new (I scraped a micro layer from the inside and polished, rubbed, sang to etc. until this leather looked incredible!). The leather wasn't long enough to accommodate a hunter's sporran, but it was perfect for a standard day wear! I'm not gonna steal Rex's thunder for pics and a review, but I will show a quick pic of the finished product. Its amazing how good this reconditioned leather looks! The gusset was made from a leather coat from the 60's--the tassels and the tassel cord are made with new leather. Enjoy until Rex provides a better review hopefully with pics.
