Traditional leather sporran strap?

Sorry for all the Q's, but;

Is a traditional sporran strap one long belt, that just buckles at the back, after passing through the slot on the sporran, or is it made in two pieces with 'snaps' to attach to the sporran as would a chain belt?

I believe it is the latter. In fact, I have them made in four pieces, with narrower leather strips replacing the chain and a regular inch wide belt and buckle for the back. Wider meets narrower at a D ring.

As I understand it a sporran 'strap' is one continuous piece with a buckle for adjustment

A sporran 'belt' is two pieces with clasps on either end like a chain arrangement.

The benefit of the strap is that it can be worn off center, or on your hip, so as not to have a buckle in the middle of your back while sitting/driving etc.

The disadvantage is that they can tend to hang a bit funny because there are no pivot points at the sporran. The strap runs through the channel on the back of the sporran which can result in the sporran tilting out at the top.

For what it's worth I use belts on mine, and have not had a problem with the buckle in the back issue. But, I can see how it may become a problem on all day car rides.

Whatever its called, I use the strap that's like a narrow leather belt. And - buckle it in the front now. Much easier to buckle and unbuckle and more comfy when seated against something. Buckle tucks behind the sporran itself usually so doesn't show.

I use a sporran strap. It is buckled at the front, just forward of my right hip. I have found no problems with tilting or hanging badly.

The advantage of using a strap rather than the chains is that the sporran can be easily slid on to the left hip for sitting, dancing close, driving or access.

I will not go back to chains.

My day sporran strap is one long length. My dress sporran chain has clips on it to attach it to my dress sporran(when I get a new one) is as described earlier. So going from the left of the sporran around my back and returning to the right side of the sporran:- clip---chain-----leather with buckle-----leather that threads through the buckle------chain-----clip. I think, I hope, that makes sense.

Anymore, I believe the term can be used applied to both.

I prefer the long belt with buckle. I wear sporran straps/belts exclusively when it comes to daywear.

I don't like the belt-chain combination and consequently don't like the strap with snaps or clips that attach to the sporran the same way. I don't like the idea of the metal clips rubbing against the fabric.

I use a one piece strap for my day wear. I just don't care for the way it looks with the spring clips jutting past the sporran. Much cleaner as just a strap.
