Blended Scotch is fine, in cocktails. Otherwise you'd end up wasting a good single malt on Rob Roys and Rusty Nails.

Besides, if EVERYONE drank only single malt, it would send the prices through the ROOF, as distilleries cannot produce unlimited amounts of the good stuff.

Apparently the Asian market for Scotch is booming too with the emergence of a larger middle class. The market there is almost entirely for blended whisky. I won't touch the stuff myself. Give me the distinct character of single malt whisky every time.

Canned haggis from Caledonian Kitchen, the only really decent canned haggis I've found. Their Highland Beef version is my favorite. I only have one can left now, but they're always at the Pleasanton Games, so I can restock this weekend without having to order online. It's really great with scrambled eggs for breakfast, BTW. . .

My son actually makes breakfast burritos with haggis and eggs. And yeah, Caledonian Kitchen haggis is surprisingly good.

I too heard that NPR piece this morning. My favorite line (to paraphrase), "Everyone has two or three luxury items they'll pay for. Scotch is one. And I'd imagine women is another."

I don't want to hijack the scotch part of this thread, but "tanked economy?" Surely not: when you look at this you can see they have pounds to burn:

British taxpayers' money is being spent on prostitutes, lap dancers and Internet dating, under schemes designed to give more independence to the disabled.

One council is using its budget to pay for the services of a prostitute in Amsterdam, while others have said visits to lap-dancing clubs are permissible under new policies that transfer funds directly to those who receive care from social services.

Holidays abroad, subscriptions for Internet dating and driving lessons have all been funded by the taxpayer under a national initiative introduced by the last Labour government.

The scheme promised to give elderly people and those with disabilities more control over the care they receive, by passing on cash so individuals could choose the services they need, such as home helps or mobility aids.

An investigation by the Daily Telegraph found exotic holidays, Internet dating subscriptions and adventure breaks, as well as visits to prostitutes and lap dancing clubs have been permitted under the system.

One local authority has agreed to a care plan including payment for a 21-year-old man with learning disabilities to have sex with a prostitute in Amsterdam next month.

Another care worker said staff at her council had been told trips to lap-dancing clubs could be funded if it could be argued it would help the "mental and physical well-being" of a client.

In response to Freedom of Information requests, four local authorities describe themselves as "condoning" the payment of sex workers by disabled clients.

Paying for sex is not against the law, but soliciting sexual services and paying for sex with women who have been coerced into prostitution is illegal in Britain

The FOI survey found most British authorities said they did not "condone" transfer of their funds to pay for sex. But of 121 councils who responded, 97 per cent said they had no policy on the topic, allowing discretion for social workers and junior managers about how to manage such requests.
