It's a beautiful tartan and the explanation of the thread colors, counts of the colors and threads is most interesting. Matt put a lot of research and meaning into that tartan. A fantastic job creating a tartan to honor the historic occasion. What an honor for Matt.

Honouring with a new tartan a visit that most Scots reject?
What a strange thing to do.

This is a highly religious-political thread from the outset.
The visit itself is already controversial, so how can comments not be controversial?

Thank you Martin. Some times those from afar are not aware of local feelings of a situation----any local situation------ and whilst meaning well, actually show no understanding of the situation in the locallity in question. There is more to this, I am afraid, than just Matt's tartan, which is a shame.

shame the profits wount be used to offsett the cost of the visit [/QUOTE]

The Catholic church have raised 8m to help pay for the cost and it is a "state visit"

It's a fine tartan, Martin, skilfully designed by a committed Scotophile. It's also national news in Scotland. IMHO this is worth acknowledging and celebrating on xmarks ... and I'm a Scottish Protestant theologian!

State and pastoral visit, the Pope comes at the invitation of the Queen, but all church services will constitute the pastoral aspect of the visit, which will be paid for by the catholic church

I think if we can all forget about the politics and religion of some previous posts, and just congratulate Matt on his fine achievement, the thread would be much better off.

I count Matt as a mate and I think to drag religion into his day of honour is a blight on the forum.

I am sure that there are other forums that you can express your religious and other views on, in relation to who's paying for what and who owes who.

Congratulations Matt and a mighty fine job you have done on the tartan design
