You'll not catch me without knickers. I have my reasons.
-
I usually wear something, but have and might again go 'regimental'.
-
I'm indiscriminate about underwear. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't.
-
Normally I'm commando, but have covered up upon occasion.

A phallus-y fallacy
As a piper who is regularly out in public playing the pipes while kilted, I can't imagine going "regimental" because when you're playing the pipes your hands aren't free to 1) fend off people who want to lift your kilt and 2) hold the kilt down in a strong wind.
The kilt-lifting usually happens in a crowded pub when you're marching through the throng while piping. You just keep marching- you don't even see who did it most of the time.
We have a cemetery here that's in a windtunnellike canyon and I've piped at funerals where the wind is so strong that I can't stand up, but have to lean at an angle against one of the huge statues. I've played the pipes hiding behind one of the statues because the wind was so strong that my kilt was up the whole time- and funeralgoers don't want to be exposed to my underwear. Imagine if I was "regimental"! I don't think I would ever get hired again.

I find it fair to ask and fair to answer. I am indifferent to going with and without. As I am also a piper there are times when you must practice caution but others when it is fun to relax.
I must admit I will never forget the time that the band drum sergeant was sitting lowly on an esky and despite his knickered state he was falling out all over the place. Sometimes even wearing underwear doesn't do the trick. The 15 year old version of me will never be the same again. haha

Geoff.......Great response. Nail on the head...Spot on, etc.
I really get get upset when the question arises. Those who know me don't aske any more. My feeling is that only inbred morons ask the question. What would happen if we walked around asking people what they were wearing under their pants? I wear my kilt proudly and with dignity. That is all others need to know. ALL OTHERS.

Wow--voted, wrote a note and failed to see why this subject would upset people. The OP didn't ask you to spill the beans on yourself. But...it seems that the most common item worn under the kilt is shoes!

OK. So let's say someone is interested in wearing a kilt for the first time. He is looking into the traditions and practices associated with wearing a kilt. He starts researching, starts asking questions, and finds all over the internet that wearing undies makes you less than a man. Then sees you, asks your opinion and gets a response of "Bugger off!! None of your damned business!" to an honest question. Is that a proper response? This thread is not discussing some drunken tosser in a bar. It's an honest inquiry. Personally, I would rather have a person ask me and give me the opportunity to educate him rather than be stereotyped.

As do I. If you're so proud and dignified, why are you so offended when people ask about the little details? How is asking about the tradition of undergarments any different from asking about the kilt pin? It's a small point of detail. The vast majority of the time when the question is put to me, it's because people genuinely don't know what is real tradition and what is hype. Why not simply educate people?
And for the record- it's supposed to be windy today, so a pair of bright yellow boxers with Sponge Bob all over them are going to be the order of the day.

No option for "underkilts" that allow protection of the kilt fabric from the body but still give the wearer FREEDOM.

I think 75% of statistics are of no use whatsoever.

I'll bet 95% of the population would agree with you- and what's more, they would be right at least 83% of the time, 9 times out of 10.
