    Day wear cantle

Would a brass cantle be ok for day wear of would I need a leather cantle to make a sporran day wear. I'm looking at making a few sporrans from a good size badger pelt and the plan so far is one full mask sporran and 2 fur sporrans one with a brass cantle and another in chrome, pewter or sterling.

If brass is still going to be formal I will need to hone my leather working skills a bit more to produce and acceptable leather cantle.

It's generally thought in modern Highland dress that brass is for day wear, silver for evenings.

In earlier times the sporran you had (whatever it was) went everywhere with you, as you generally only had one.

    Downunder,

    Thanks for that picture.
Been messing about making a cantle myself, and made a dropped hinge to give the bag more 'gape' Wasn't sure if this was right or not, but see this one is made that way.

    Helps a lot!
    Thanks again!

Brass is certainly suitable for daywear! I would like to point out that C.R. MacKinnon, in his book Scottish Tartans and Highland Dress, says there's no reason not to wear a sporran with a silver cantle in the day time (unless you're trying to blend in to your surroundings).

The sporran that Downunder posted above -- just for everyone's information -- sold this week on e-Bay for GBP668, that's about USD 1100.

As Rex has said this sporran was on ebay and there were several photos of it which showed how the bag was attached, the locking mechanism, etc.
If you would like a copy of them let me know

Purely for education it would be great to get those pics. I'm still sorting through things in my head before making my first cut in any hide or leather. any fur scraps left will be made into tassles for the dress sporran though I hope to have virtualy no waste from these projects.
