"Correct" at Faire?
.....only if you're on the staff. Otherwise, relax like Davedove said and go have fun. If you want to wear a kilt, then wear a kilt.
I too have a belted plaid, which I team up with fantasy ghilles (which cost a mint and I regret buying) cadadh that I made, a poufy shirt, and a doublet that laces up the front. I have a nifty wool tam that my friend Elise made for me, or I wear a very simple gray beret.
And now I have a truly phenomenal targe, made for my by Panache!!!

I normally attend the Pa ren faire at Mt. Hope on weekends. I will be found wearing my black AK, boots and a T-shirt of some description. That for me is mundane wear. A Ren Faire is THE place for fun and fantasy kit as much as meticulously researched costume. As the kids say, "it's all good". The only thing someone might reasonably comment on is if you look like you're Not having fun. Garb up and enjoy.

Reason: missed word
"The Highland dress is essentially a 'free' dress, -- that is to say, a man's taste and circumstances must alone be permitted to decide when and where and how he should wear it... I presume to dictate to no man what he shall eat or drink or wherewithal he shall be clothed." -- The Hon. Stuart Ruaidri Erskine, The Kilt & How to Wear It, 1901.

I see the major difference in wardrobe being one of venue. Folks have peeves about "refaire types" showing thus adorned to Highland Games because it's not the place for it. However, a rennaisance faire is exactly the place for, well, renfaire attire. If you want to wear chainmail, a pirate eyepatch, fairy wings or a kilt, go for it. Have no doubt, someone there will be wearing all of the above.
I wouldn't wear outlandish and garrish clothes many places, but have often to Halloween costume parties. Think of renfaire as a big costume party if you want, or you can go in jeans and t-shirt.
I wish I believed in reincarnation. Where's Charles Martel when you need him?

You can never go wrong with a kilt at Ren Faire. If you're lucky, you may even get a blue ribbon.

* Never mind, it was just a pirate shirt and kilt.

Most RenFests I have attended in jeans and a T-shirt. One time I did go in a kilt at the request of some ladies, although I never actually saw them while I was there!
I felt oddly out of place in a kilt and T-shirt, though, whereas that would fit right in at the average celtic fest or Irish fest. Everyone else in kilts were either dressed 19th century formal (wrong period, of course) or wearing a great kilt (correct period) or trying to fake a great kilt by wearing a piper's plaid tucked in (ughh!). Plus most were wearing ghillie shirts, not T-shirts.
Since then I have bought a ghillie shirt, but in green, not white. It's not authentic, but seems to be acceptable wear at these things. I have never yet worn it, although RenFest season is upon us once again.
I'm not likely to get a great kilt, but I am seriously considering getting a piper's plaid. I refuse point blank to tuck it inside my kilt, though! In any case, the only one I could get that would match one of my existing kilts would be Irish National from Stillwater, and the kilt in question is the Thrifty Kilt, which has velcro, so if I tried to tuck in a piper's plaid the kilt would probably fall down, LOL! In any case, the piper's plaid is intended to simulate the great kilt, but no piper would be seen dead with it tucked in. I am not a piper, FWIW.
One final complaint about RenFest kilties. The ones that wear ladies' kilts with the buckles moved to the other side. You can still tell, you know, because the pleats run in the 'wrong' direction! You see plenty of those, including on the staff.

I wear my kilt as I usually would. If anyone complains, I just tell them that I am from the future and in the future, We will have the kilt police. That usually shuts their pie hole and I can get back to having fun.
