Best Scotch for the $ ?

My first choice for price in a malt is Glenmorangie Original, too, but for a blend Grants doesn't sit on the drinks tray and gather dust either. Yes, but I have a Bruichladdich Wave on my tongue at the moment and at GBP41 I am a very happy person

Grants is my blend of choice as well! My go-to Whiskeys are Macellan 12 Laphroaig 10, Ardbeg 10 and Auchentoshan Classic. Pretty much anything spendier is a special occasion bottle.

Yes, that would be hard to turn down. Highland Park 12 is CAD65 in British Columbia and GBP28 in Scotland.

I happened to be shopping for a bottle of whisky for a friend and the owner of the store recommended a speyside named Tamdhu. I have never heard of this particular label, but he sang its praises most eloquently. Plus at $24.99 per, I had to try it. I must say, most enjoyable, and the best 10 year old I have ever had - clean, fruity and refreshing with little aftertaste. All things considered, it's my new favorite.

So after reading this posting last evening I just happened to drop by the local ABC (Liquor) here in Virginia and low and behold I came across Tamdhu for $19.99 a bottle sitting here at the moment with a wee Dram and I must say I certainly agree with the above statement fruity I taste a bit of Pear & Peach followed quickly with a dash of Pepper and a very clean finish and no distinct aftertaste , so I too have to add this to my favorite list , though my main standard is Glennfiddich 12 or 15

That depends on your budget, and your tastes.

There are some questions in the universe that are unanswerable by mere mortals. Yours is one of these. [....]

There are too many regional styles (Islay, Highland, Speyside, etc.) from too many distillers to come up with a single recommendation for anyone's palate.

I generally recommend a Macallen 12 yr as an intro to Scotch, but beyond dipping your toe in to try the waters (so to speak), it's a matter of educating yourself on the possibilities and trying a few out to see which direction you want to go.

Good to see you still hanging around here. I would agree that the best way is to just try several and make up your own mind. What I might find and think was the best value for my tastes won't work for everyone.

BUT, the best overall value, to me, is whatever someone else is buying for me to drink.

Picked up a bottle of the Tomatin 12 Year Old the other day, for $23.00US locally. Very good stuff!

For me, the low end is Glenlivet or Glenfiddich. They're reasonably smooth and taste like scotch. But they're both kind of non-descript. I could go and tell you about my favorites, which are all more expensive. But obviously all the more expensive malts are someone's favorite, right?

If I don't want to spend that much money on a drink, I'd rather buy something like Svedka vodka, which is a high quality spirit for not too much coin. Better to drink an inexpensive good quality (more highly refined) alcohol than cheap liquor.
