I have just had formal shirts made to measure with just shirt collar size, weight and age as the vital statistics and all done by biometrics.

A kilt is a different matter and as Pleater , Paul-Henry, Barb T and all the other makers have said... It all depends on many variables, and not just body measurements.
And it's curious that many of the pipers I know are either engineers, scientists, or mathematicians......

I have noticed that also, as the pipers that I play with are all scientists, doctors, and engineers. I am learning the pipes at an auld age, and with the use of Barb T's book have sewn three kilts. Three of my piping friends are surgeons, and have sewn their own kilts, jackets, etc. No two kilts are the same, as the sett & weight of the fabric along with the shape of the person (ever changing), determine the end result. I am now sewing a kilt for a friend that involves twelve yards of tartan to make it work.....

I take the question to mean (and correct me if I'm wrong), "what is the average waist size of the kilts sold?".

While I agree with the comments from others about kilts being made to measure, I'll give you an "overly simple" answer and just compare the WAIST measurements as the waist / hips / length vary on almost every kilt...

For us (USA Kilts), the average customer is probably a 42" waist or so. Sure, we have our share of lower 30's, but we also have more than our share of BIG customers... our largest on record being a 72" waist with 78" hips. While that one is our record, I will say that we regularly get customers in the 50's and sometimes 60's for their waist.

    Thumbs up
The last 2 kilts I made were:
    a 49" waist 51" hips 21"drop
    and a
    34" waist 31" hips 22.5" drop

and that sort of variation isn't unusual! As Longhuntr74 says, kiltmakers make to size, so there is not really a standard or popular size, and that, as a kiltmaker is exactly what I like!
That is what I am looking for in a kiltmaker!
