Musings on the Last Games of the Season: Ventura

It's been a good season, a breakthough season for me despite having to deal with 3 months of knee trouble. Saturday was the Santa Cruz Games. My stones and weights were mediocre, about what I did at Pleasanton, but this time I didn't let myself get grumpy about it. Those results are because while I have no pain in my knees, I still don't have anything like full strength in the lower quads, I feel it when I climb steps. Caber was just sad, and there's nothing I can do about it, so no reason to get mad. Despite that, I launched my 2nd and 3rd best heavy hammer tosses, ever; 66+ feet. I also finally went over 20 feet in the 16 pound sheaf, thereby setting a new PR. I probably could have cleared 22, apparently I slammed the bag into the bar on the way up, on my 2nd toss. I cleared 13 (*barely*) once again in the weight over the bar.

So now, one more week to the last Games of the season at Ventura. I will practice twice this week, the last two practices of this season. My goals for this Games is to 1.) have fun and keep smiling because any day you're on the field and throwing, it's a good day... 2.) get at least one light hammer toss out there past 85 feet and see if I can't push my PR up to 88. 3.) get 22 feet in the sheaf. 4.) introduce my brother in law and my oldest nephew to some of the throwers, including Summer Pierson, since he's a shot-putter and discus-thrower at his high school.

I'm working on my fork tonight. I bought a little grinding wheel for my drill and three grits of emery paper. I figure, if I went 20 with a really rough fork that I could barely get into the bag, I'll do some kind of better with a nice smooth fork.

I'm just starting to think about the off-season. I think I will take 3 weeks off to just heal up, and *then* start the off-season weight training routine.

Best of luck next weekend Alan.
Hope the weather isn't going to be too warm.
