The white metal and black cord of the handle work for me as a casual sgian. The knife is narrow and slender enough to ride well in a sock, and the blade works well as a working knife. This is my day to day, casual sgian. and the price is 39.95.

I just spotted this knife on Amazon for $25. Does it come with a sheath?

Honestly, I mostly freeze in class. I sit thee for an hour in a cold room, yeah. Okay, well I need another pair of socks anyway, all of the suggestions are great.

And I do carry a 3 1/2 blade in my pocket. Still would love a sgian Dubh, but I think it is a good idea to wait and get a good sgian dubh. I had been looking at one that was 35 by Sports Kilt.

Thanks again for all your help.

    Hmmmmmm.

25$ ain't bad for that little toadsticker, even if it is made in China as I suspect. Considering it's going to be used for "pocketknife stuff"...opening the mail, cutting food, paring fingernails, whittling wood for one reason or another, prying things, and generally being abused, 25$ is a deal and who cares how well it keeps an edge...if it goes out, resharpen, it was only 25 bucks.

Personally, if you're wearing a utilikilt, I agree that proper kilt hose would look odd. That said, if you're not wearing proper kilt hose, I think a sgian dubh would look odd.

All of my kilts are of a traditional style and material, and I always wear kilt hose (save in the very hottest of weather). On top of that, I have a couple of pretty good sgians dubh. To add to that, the airport and government buildings are the only places I go without a good knife on my person. Even in the face of all that, I rarely wear a sgian dubh. I prefer a folder, most times, and when I do wear a sgian, I usually still carry my folder.

For what it's worth, try not to fall into the sgian dubh hype.

Hmm, somehow I missed that he was wearing the UK. I don't think the Lewis hose would be right, and forget about a traditional sgian dubh.

    Sorry.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Hahaha, yeah, I would still like to have one with it, but for now I will skip on it. I like to carry several knives on me almost everywhere.

My current pair of hoses are black, so with the black kilt, they look good. For warm weather, i wear long hiking socks which go over my boots a couple of inches.

USAKilts has great hose for $20.00. Usually I order a size down. I'd normally go with a large but go, instead, to a medium. If I stick with the correct size, they tend to be too big. Just me, though.

As mentioned on previous posts, it's gonna be hard to get a decent sgian dubh for $40.00. You'll probably want a day sign, by the way; to be had for around $60.00 and up! Good luck with your decision!

Yes, it is a hard composite material (I think they call it krytron) the the blade sort of clicks into. It is not at all thick.

Hmmm. I guess we disagree. I wear kilt hose most of the time with either tartan, solid, or contemporary kilts. Do not have a utilikilt, but my Flamingo and Camo Sportkilts look just fine with kilt hose, and a sgian. I also always carry a knife wear legally allowed to. Might also carry my folder when kilted, but it depends on the pocket situation that day.

Try sock-dreams.com. I would seriously consider NOT wearing a knife to class. Weapons are forbidden(i.e. illegal) on most campuses. 4 1/2" is the legal limit in Texas, however some LE would consider the sgian to be a concealed weapon in the hose. Depends on the attitude of the wearer a majority of the time. Just some friendly advice.
