New Johnston Box Pleat
Well, I've finally completed (and gotten pictures uploaded of) the Johnston Box Pleat. It's been out and about a couple of times:
On the way to the Farmer's Market:
(with the required pleat shot
At the Heber Sheep-dog trials:
and dressed-up for a work event:
The next project? I've been working on a tartan based on a long-out-of-use grant of arms made to an ancestor after he saved the Freiherr von Adelsheim's life in the 1530 peasant revolts. My grandfather became long standing friends of the current Freiherr, and so was fond of them, though of course never used them as personal arms. They look like this:
I've been working on a tartan based on these, which I just got a sample woven of, and I like. I think that might be the next project in line:
Many thanks to all the usual people around here who give those of us attempting kilt making for the first time the necessary advice and help!

Good job! Looks like you've jumped in with both feet, mate.
And that tartan is mighty handsome. I usually don't go for the "bright" colors, but I really like that one. I like the use of the dark red, and the purple and black lines add some real interest. It's almost as if the lines aren't "expected" and your attention is drawn to them.
Good show.

Beautiful Kilt! When was the Heber Sheep Dog Trials... I wanted to attend that this year.

The Heber sheepdog trials are always Labor Day weekend (this is how long it's taken me to get pictures off the camera. Ah well). They're definitely worth the trip up there.

Congrats on your new kilt. It looks great. Your tartan project looks interesting. How did you get the sample woven? Tell us more about the process.
Skål!

Well, Oddern, the sample is actually a bit of project multi-tasking. I'm working on a cathedral window quilt using scraps of cotton tartans (hence, a Highland Cathedral quilt). I couldn't find a nice tartan example of Johnston, so I found someone to weave one. It turned out quite nicely. While I was at it, I had him weave up the other one I was working on to see what it might look like in the flesh. I was quite pleased with his work, and to get enough of the cotton woven to have a sense of it wasn't very expensive at all c. $35?. The weaving is both careful and even; the only possible complaint is that there is the occasional loop on the selvedge. He's at http://www.michaelweaverfibers.com/ Meanwhile, I also have another nice cotton tartan to use in my quilt.
If that's not what you're asking, let me know.
Cheers, T

Second, your Facebook album is set to private so your pictures don't show up here. You might want to try uploading them to Photobucket or something similar and then changing the links in your thread.

Sorry if the photos aren't showing up. They are on photobucket, and seem to be set to open access. I can't figure out why they wouldn't be. If anyone else has an idea, please let me know.
