Do this! It'll look SMOKIN. There are a couple examples around...but it'll work a little bit the other way 'round, in that your tartan will stand out A LOT vs the small splashes of color in our traditional formal attire. Pick several potential tartans from the rental shop (check with Matt Newsome at the tartan museum, btw), then check with your date, to see what color dress she might like to wear. Green dress? Green-based tartan. Blue dress? You get the idea. Want to really stand out? Royal Stewart, and make sure your date is the prototypical "girl in the red dress". The bottom line is, she may only have one dress, so find several tartans you like...this will be an area of compromise in your color choices. If she is wearing a black dress, or white, a simple tartan sash will do, in silk.
Concerned that the local two-bit authoritarians are going to complain about your kilt? Wear your family tartan. When the fan swings your way, your expression of your culture will deflect any stink aimed in your direction.
Show your colors!
...And don't ask for permission.
Leave the sgian dubh at home.
