Belt for Montrose Doublet
I was wondering,
is it necessary to use a large solid-buckle type belt with a montrose doublet, or would something like this:
also be ok?
Cheers,
Michael

I've seen the "waistplate" style, and--to my mind--the large silver buckle sets off the black front much better.

But I will have to say, that's a pretty nice lookng belt you show. I just tend to think that the larger, solid silver waistplate would look best.

I'll have to agree with my northern neighbor and regrettably disagree with my southern one and say, "Yes, that belt would look really nice with a Montrose."

and here's a nice Montrose... http://cgi.ebay.com/Antique-Vintage-...item2c58c2d237
The size looks to be about a 40, but don't blame me if it doesn't fit... I just blew my budget on a Dress Stewart kilt, acting on the advice of the assembled company.

I've been thinking about making a dress belt from the below buckle
Maclowlife: I spotted that Montrose earlier... I WISH the Scots were a bit bigger when it came to vintage clothes! Whatever happened to a 44R guys?! Yer not all tiny, I know that, otherwise you'd not have the name "Big Yan", right?

The web site says that belt is 1-7/8" wide so at just under 2" it should work very well.
A follow on question for those more familiar with the Montrose style. Is it more common for the buckle to be symmetrical rather than asymmetrical?
This is a 2.5" belt. http://www.oconeeleatherworks.com/Belts.htm

Ok, thanks for the input!
It is a fairly reasonable belt proportion-wise, I was really just wondering if it would look strange, by not having a huge solid buckle (which I don't really prefer anyway) and indeed by also not being symetrical.
The buckle is sterling silver and engraved beautifully (I think) and comes with option of thistle/acanthus and scroll engraving!
(I've got a wedding to plan...)
Cheers,
Michael

I think it would look fine, but I like a look that is just a bit different than everyone else. I don't think you need to have a symmetrical buckle, but it would seem natural to have a second keeper to secure the loose end of the belt as it exits the buckle. That would give you a symmetrical look.
