I've been using acid dyes, specifically ALJO dye (www.aljodye.com) on the lower east side in NYC. Reads: for silk, wool & nylon. There are others on-line: Sabraset, Lanacet dyes come to mind.
Very simple to use - weight your goods, then pre-wet. Use the 1 - 5% ratio of dye powder (light - dark shade). I used glauber's salt (sodium sulfate) for even color distribution and vinegar for ph and to set the color. Heat dyepot with dye & goods on the stove, till it comes to a boil stirring frequently - simmer for a bit (30 min, or so). Leave on the stove, off-heat, to cool for an hour - 90 min, then rinse in hot water the same as the dye bath.
