Hiking and hunting kilted are two of my favorite activities. I wear hiking boots and knee highs of a good material. I have been looking for a "fire resistant" kilt. Of course my wife says if I am worried about setting fire to myself I probaly should not be doing that kilted.

Late to this thread, but to answer earlier questions...yes, gaiters can be used under a kilt. See?

In all seriousness, Underarmor with 6" inseams and Goldbond powder are the best thing for long hikes and backpacking trips. There is no need to go "traditional" on a good hike and it can actually cause more problems than it's worth if it's humid. Take it from someone with hundreds of miles under his belt, wear the underwear, and powder down. I have found it to be invaluable.

Wool kilt FTW. Duck cloth ie heavy cotton would be a close second, at least for dry weather.

I was following links from the tattersal shirt thread, and MacMillan of Rathdown posted a link to William Powell. Found some really cool gaiters there! Here are the links:

http://www.william-powell.co.uk/Prod...-Gaiters-Calf/ (These are leather gaiters which seem perfect for my purposes, and the price is outstanding.)

http://www.william-powell.co.uk/Prod...rdura-Gaiters/ (These are cordura, and twice the price of the leather ones, which makes no sense to me.)

http://www.william-powell.co.uk/Prod...r-Ram-Gaiters/ (Not sure what these are made of.)

I finally decided to go with some WWII gaiters/leggings. I just got these off eBay (they're dated 1943):

I figure they should work pretty well over thick military socks or kilt hose. I'll probably post a new thread with pics when I get them in and can get out on the trail with them.

I thought about making my own too, but you can find these things all over the internet for around $20. I figured it wasn't worth the hassle of buying material and grommets and doing all the work of trial-and-error to figure out a pattern. The $20 was well-spent on an original pair of WWII leggings. If I want custom gaiters later, I can use them as a base for a new pattern.
