new member with questions
Hello from Birmingham, Alabama. I just joined this group today because I have questions regarding tartans, weaving, and kilt making and your group looks like the perfect place to get some answers. I have recently designed my own tartan using an online design site. The design is to honor my wife whom I lost just over three years ago at the age of 29. I have submitted the necessary information to the Scottish Register of Tartans and I am anxiously awaiting their reply as to whether or not it will become a registered tartan. My question to you fine folks is this: if it is registered by the organization, where can I find a quality weaver in or near Alabama to have my tartan made into suitable material for having kilts made? Thanks for any advice you can give.

from South Wales UK!
Alas being in the UK I cannot assist with local weavers, I am closer to the other and original Birmingham.

Welcome aboard from America's North Coast!
For starters, condolences on your loss.
As to having the tartan woven (a VERY nice commemoration, BTW) you might wish to cast your net further than Alabama. Your best bet for a small run of fabric is probably DC Dalgliesh. If I remember correctly their minimum order is 4 yards (double width) which is just what you need to make most standard 8yd kilts.
Most other weavers have a minimum closer to 10yds, if I have my info straight.

I agree with Artificer: Dalgliesh is the best. For non-kilt fabric, there's probably a local weaver who could produce some fabric in your tartan made from cotton or some other fiber, that you could use for a tablecloth, a shirt, or any number of other things.
You might want to call the Scottish Tartans Museum about weavers here in the southeast. They'll know who to put you in contact with.
Welcome aboard, by the way, from western North Carolina, the greatest place on Earth!

Welcome to the forum! So sorry for your loss, and I commend you for
finding such a personal remembrance. Birmingham is large enough to
have one or more knitting supplies shops, and where there are knitters
gathered, there will possibly be a spinner's or weaver's guild member.
Store staff may know some. Barring that, I just now googled "weaver's
guild - alabama" and got a half-dozen or more responses in various parts
of the state. An e-mail or three should turn up someone in the area
competent to meet your need. Proximity is good, as you want oversee
yarn choice and color personally, or they may prefer you provide to
eliminate confusion. Our own Matt Newsome, of the Tartan Museum
might also have recommendations.
I agree that Dalgliesh would be an excellent choice.

from Chicago. I would definitely contact Matt Newsome at the Scottish Tartan Museum in NC. As a kiltmaker he frequently orders tartan woven for special orders for customers.
