My Pea Coat Experience...
I just posted this in another thread:
The Classic Navy Pea Coat...
I've worn a Navy pea coat with the kilt and been pretty happy with the way it fits etc, and it's super warm of course. You won't need any other layers with the pea coat! Mine is basically a military issue jacket and so dark navy that it's almost black. I think it should work well with virtually any tartan. It's also got this great big collar that reaches almost to your ears when pulled up! Nice against the wind, snow and rain.
I think that pea coat style is kinda comin' back in now, too. Check with some of the bigger department stores to see if they've a stock pea coat that's maybe lighter than a regulation wool one. Ya know, I keep tellin' folks I'm a trend setter, but they just roll their eyes at me... Goes to show ya that if you hold on to your clothes long enough (say twenty years or so) you'll be right back in fashion again, no bother.
There really is no need to cut down a pea coat for a kilt simply because IMO it is not a fitted garment (like a sport coat). I can't imagine it would be anything but ruined if you tired to cut down a regulation Navy issue pea coat.

I have a pea coat (still in) and I would treat it the same way you would a rain coat or a cloak.

Here are a couple shots of a "pea coat" I recently purchased from Old Navy.

Not seen in the pic is my sporran which is completely covered by the coat when closed.
I suppose one could alter the front and put in a cut away for the sporran. You would loose some of your pocket depth.
The back shot shows a good portion of the kilt is covered. Granted I have short legs but that is a 24" long kilt and about 7" is still visible.

Your Pea coat seems longer on you than mine on me, but if I recall you're proportions are on the squarish side(?), CavScout, and I've a particularly long waist... Anyway, I finally got a couple of studio shots of my own pea coat, much broken in (though I don't think you can really tell?). In my haste I didn't think to get a shot of the pleats like CavScout (guid on ye).

In my experience the pea coat is warm enough that there is no need to wear it closed except in the worst of conditions, eg Glen Coe blizzard.

When buttoned it just barely covered my sporran, which I think I wear pretty high (almost at belly button).
Anywho... I highly recommend wearing a pea coat with the kilt, SANS ALTERATION. I look forward to seeing how the project turns out otherwise.

Nice, the visual proportions on your coat look great. I measured from the back seam of the neck to bottom of the coat and it was about 33". Is that about what GI Pea Coats are?

I think one of our mods (Ancienne Alliance) is wearing something that would give you a good idea what a shortened pea coat would look like

I have a Pea Coat and wear it with my kilt all winter long. It DOES cover my sporran, but I'm not that picky... it keeps me warm from the car into the building.

Regulation Measurements...?

Thanks! Yeah, only did a rough measure but it's at least 30" from neck to tail and could easily be 33". My pea coat should be a 46R chest as well. I'm sure that will effect how long they come, not being fitted or tailored etc.

It occurs to me that pea coats from the days of yore were a bit longer than the modern ones. I have no photographic reference to back this up but I seem to remember from pre-WWII photos that the pea coats were longer and had more flare from the waist to the hem...

AA, the link above references a Bridge Coat that might be what you are speaking of. It reached to the thighs.
