    Kilt for the misses

    Good day all,

Would like to get a gift certifacate for Amy since the last kilt I got her from Sport Kilt is a little bit of a disappointment in the way the pleats lay (or more to the point don't lay) and that at 5' 10' her legs are a quite a bit longer than most ladies. Not that I object to seeing her legs but she feels a little uncomfortable with the length. So I figured I'll do the gift certifacate thing (and take the penelty as she feels they are a cop out) and let her choose her tartan and measurements (I get to help )

Problem is that most manufactures offer an 18" mini-kilt and she would probably prefer around 21" or so. Looking to get in the $200-$300 out of 11 oz wool or PV.

    Thanks,
    Jim

Rocky sells womens' PV mini-kilts, and I'm sure he could do any custom order you desired.

(Although I must state my objection to using the term "kilt" when describing ladies' wear.)

I got my lass a rather nice, stock (off the rack), 11oz worsted wool tartan, 20" length, machine sewn kilt-skirt from Strathmore. The price was very reasonable at £36 including shipping and it was a fast turn-around. The only difficulty was that I had to fax them an order form instead of online shopping.

Most of the kiltmakers here also make ladies's skirts. I'd imagine some of them will be answering you soon.
Does she need a pair of hand-knit hose to wear with the new skirt?

Unless they're butch, most women should not wear kilts. The exception is women who are in pipe bands.

My Dad would argue with that, too. He feels that no woman should ever wear a kilt - -no exception.

But you were asking for opinions, right?

You mean, perhaps, Gordon tartan, for Stephen in The Well of Loneliness?

But I wore my first kilts over 50 years ago - it's a bit late to start having opinions about that now.

Gosh Pyper - that is very inflammatory. And if I may put an opposite view, wrong on so many levels. Long before acrylic or PV were discovered for kiltmaking, my mother, grandmother and both of my aunts wore kilts. Not kilted skirts, not tartan skirts, but real kilts. As did many women in the middle classes and most of the county set. I can't remember any of them being butch.

Maybe, you and your father know a different type of woman?

    Regards

    Chas

Thank you for pointing that out. I intended it to be humorous and not inflammatory, but I see how it could be.

I apologize if I have offended anyone with the wording of my post.

However, I feel it is important for women who are considering wearing a kilt, especially an 8 yard woolen kilt, to understand that there are many men who perceive them the way I do.

To me, a woman wearing a kilt is like a woman wearing a tuxedo or a three piece suit.

I will also point out that while it might be possible, I've never seen a kilt hang properly on a woman's body. Plenty of men they don't fit properly either, but that's a different thread (another attempt at humor)...

In a poll on a piping forum 9 out of 70 respondents thought that even women in bands should wear something other than a kilt (and I wasn't one of the 9).

I'm glad you clarified that Pyper. I saw that this morning and I had to set the laptop aside to make sure I didn't type something, well, let's just say the thread would be closed rather quickly.

Comments on the wife are a bit of a button topic for me.

Granted you continue going on that she would still be thought of that way so...

I know that there are those who don't approve of ladies wearing kilts. There are those who don't approve of those who aren't Scottish shouldn't be taking Scotland's National garb. There are those that don't like modern kilts. If you get three people in a single room you will not get them to agree on every topic.

My intent is not to insult or disrespect those who feel a requirement for the kilt to be a man only garment. I ask the Mods to please close down the thread and move it to the Penalty Box for being an offense/inflammatory topic. I will take care of this off forum.

    Jim
