Thanks for those great vintage shots, Richard. I also have one day-wear plaid in the MacIntyre Hunting Modern and have enjoyed wearing it on occasion.

Here are some more worthy gents with day plaids:

"Before two notes of the theme were played, Colin knew it was Patrick Mor MacCrimmon's 'Lament for the Children'...Sad seven times--ah, Patrick MacCrimmon of the seven dead sons....'It's a hard tune, that', said old Angus. Hard on the piper; hard on them all; hard on the world." Butcher's Broom, by Neil Gunn, 1994 Walker & Co, NY, p. 397-8.

It's interesting to see that ankle boots were often worn with the Kilt back in the day. Presumably that's because they were the style of the time and those were the boots they had.

In The Highlanders Of Scotland the 56 kilted figures are wearing the following footwear:

    25 Mary Jane style
11 Ghillie style (only one pair black, it with buckles)
10 ordinary shoes (what I would call an "Oxford")
    5 buckle loafers
    3 ankle boots
    1 spats
1 unique shoe halfway between a Mary Jane and a Ghillie

One cool thing about the Inverurie photo above is that it was taken at the same time that The Highlanders Of Scotland portraits were painted and it shows exactly the same sorts of things being worn, difficult to explain away by the people today who claim that the dress shown in The Highlanders Of Scotland was fictional.

Mmmmm... three out of fifty six you say.

It's interesting to see that ankle boots were... sometimes worn with the Kilt back in the day.
