I had no idea this would generate such a response. Thanks for the ideas, info, and pictures. My son is currently in the Navy so I may have to ask him to pick one up for me.
All the best,
Bruce

real pea coats
Maybe you could get him to help the forum members out. Although, the
reaction might be a little strange if he walked in and said he needs 214
pea coats. Good solution for you, though.

If it rests your mind any please hit up the Corps of Cadets pipes and drums facebook page. To army navy we wore the cadet short overcoat (gray pea coat). I had the lads tuck up the skirts of the coat in front to revel the sporan. it didnt work to well as they kept falling back down. i think some pins will be in use in the future. link below to a photo of one of our drummers with the skirts in front pinned up.

Since so many Navy guys have had their say, I'll put in my 2 cents....
I agree that I would leave a USN regulation Pea Coat alone. It is intended as an overcoat and to keep you warm. Not strictly a fashion jacket, per se. In fact, Navy officers and Senior Enlisted personnel are required to wear the Dress Blue Jacket under the pea coat--just strengthening my point that it is an overcoat, to be worn OVER your other garments.
As for having a pea coat tailored, I would go with one like you found at Old Navy or some similar store. I saw them in there yesterday on clearance-dirt cheap. They are MUCH thinner and lighter weight than the USN version. Also, they are designed for fashion, not as an overcoat. I would suspect a tailor (or yourself if you are so well gifted, but I am not) would have much more luck with the thinner light weight commercial version from Old Navy, the GAP or some other civilian fashion store.
And, of course, if you do get a pea coat modified...be sure to post pics!
Just my 2 cents...

They quit making the good wool watch caps years ago...the new ones are acrylic crap...and of course the wie dropped my original in to the washer once...nice yamulke...for a ferrett...
Pea coats are nice...bridge coats are better.
I have a russian navy peacoat around here somewhere...I should short
en the sleeves and wear that....

I still have the Pea coat that I was issued 25 years ago in boot camp and still wear mine regularly along with my "woolie" sweater, if it gets to cold my wife bought me a bridge coat for christmas 2 years ago from http://www.usnavypeacoat.com/Bridge_Coat_p/bridge.htm Though I don't wear bridge coat that often.

Well, Trey’s post and picture confirm for me what I have been itching to say as I read this thread: that there is good reason for tailoring a pea coat to accommodate the sporran.
Not everyone will want to do this, but those who want the coat’s warmth combined with a practical item of wear with the kilt, this is certainly the way to go.
Having said that, though, it is unlikely I will require one. It is rarely that cold in my country.
Regards,
Mike

They're still being made (see here).
I still have mine from my days at Benning.
