Or moving for'ard a bit to the 1700s, how 'bout the Scottish pirate (per the English anyway) John Paul Jones, the "Father of the American Navy"?

You're pretty well out of the Renaissance by then.

Aye, well, but so are the 1600s. . .

Really? I thought the Renaissance is generally accepted as having encompassed most of the 17th century.

Scottish Pirates, why not?
Ever heard of John Paul Jones?
The Kilt is my delight !

The influx of pirates at Renn Faires is nonsensical, as they pretty much all dress as seafarers of the Black Beard, Jack Sparrow "Golden Age" period: 1700-1720, which is at least a century out of whack. (And no pirates, Scottish or otherwise, counted kilts as part of their sea-going garb!)
Anyways, one could easily portray a "sea-dog" of the Elizabethan period - one of Drake's or Hawkin's men - which would look way cooler at the Faire than an anachronistic 18th C. privateer....

The last one I attended. I wore my kilt and a polo short. Kind of like what I wear when I go out to a restaurant around here during the summer.

What's cool about our local Ren Faire is the variety of stuff one sees.
I really admire the people who pick a specific period and persona and dress with accuracy and care.
I also get a kick out of seeing all the wacky blends of various time periods and regions, like a person in a modern kilt wearing a fez and carrying a Samurai sword or whatever.
I myself, when going to the Ren Faire as a tourist, wear a Newcastle United shirt. It makes ordering beer quite easy. And it's authentically English. I wear the shirt with khaki shorts and sneakers.
At other times I'll go to the Ren Faire to play pipes, my Doublepipes which are loosely based on the pipes usually associated with Cornwall but also played throughout Britain during the Renaissance period. When I do this I wear typical English Renaissance clothing.
Here I am playing the actual Cornish Doublepipes for a gathering of Cornish Bards:

[QUOTE=Zardoz;913466]Tobus, I'd think the general tone of the "never-ending thread about Scottish Festival peeves" would put you off of asking anyone here about Renaissance Faire!
But I do wear a kilt to faire, and I like to have fun, so here's a couple examples of what I generally wear;
Ah, the fiddle player from Circa Paleo. Niiiiice. Missed you at Sherwood this year. I think we're camping this year. See you then maybe?
