Welcome aboard from the Midlands of South Carolina.
When you say that you are looking for a modern that is easy to take care of, does that mean that you are looking for something machine washable or for a more traditional wool? There are many kilt makers that are using Polyester Viscose (PV) for kilts now. That is were some of us new rabble started from.
I've found that most relationships work best when no one wears pants.

I am actually looking for more of a heavy canvas? or something that I can tromp around in, and not worry about getting it dirty. I do a lot of work with various theatre productions and just want something that is comfortable and preferably black or very dark. I know my family's tartan, but am more interested in a more modern look. Looking at a Black Box-pleated kilt currently. Opinions on Box-pleated kilts?

Sounds like you are looking for a UtiliKilt. I had the chance to look at some during the Scottish Games at Charleston this year, fairly stout looking. Hope that this helps.

Hello and a warm Celtic from Boston, Massachusetts.
I am one of the daily kilt wearers, and love my Semi-trads from USA Kilts. For the beater kilt, I have a homemade denim from some extra heavy black denim that I got from Jo-Ann's Fabrics, then followed Barb T's book to make it like the traditional kilt. It is still taking a regular beating well, all be it with curved pleats. I also own some Utilikilts. The Workman is made of extra heavy Duck and can stand on its own when you take it off.
You may wish to check out the modern kilts made by Freedom Kilts, or Alt kilts above. Both are designed to take some heavy wearing.

Well folks,
After wandering around the site for a little while, I came across an thread by F-H.C.A.G (hope I got that right) and another thread by Alan H. Both threads had to do with what they called an X-Kilt. After looking through the threads, I realized I have skills needed to create one of these kilts, and that they were basically exactly what I was looking for. So after finding some fabric and preping it, I am proud to say, I am done with the pleating and over half way through the sewing part. I took a few liberties with it, but will be posting the pictures of it as soon as it is finished. Wish me luck!
