Kilted @ Walmart on St. Andrews Day

I wear my Utilikilt to work at Wal-mart, mostly in the Spring/Summer. I usually wear a navy polo shirt with it, tan hose(also from Utilikilts), navy or red flashes(green on St. Patrick's Day), and a sgian dubh in addition to my safety razor. I got another guy to convert to the kilt for work and we were trying to get another guy to go kilted but he didn't have the spare cash.

At first I got some stares, some curmudgeons thought it was a dress, most of the female employees liked it, some customers give compliments and tell about the time they went to Scotland. Customers ask if I throw logs, if I'm Irish, if I'm Welsh, sometimes even if I'm Scottish! Do I play the bagpipes, will I do the Highland fling for them, can they peek...

I've worn my Utilikilt and sgian in front of the District Manager and I think in front of the Regional Manager. No problems. I'm sure there are more of us out there. Maybe we should bombard their Wal-mart World magazine with photos of us kilties and see if they print them.

At least around here, nearly all positive comments are from women, while the haters (though fewer and much farther inbetween) are nearly all men. I think that's one of my favorite parts about kilts - Women love them.

Maybe we should bombard their Wal-mart World magazine with photos of us kilties and see if they print them.

I LIKE IT! I don't work for Wal-mart, but I'd love to see something like that take place. Hell, I'm sure there are magazines for most of our respective industries... maybe we could start something even bigger.

Bravo! I too wore my kilt for St. Andrews Day to work. We have no dress code at my job (Apple); mostly young engineers in jeans and tee shirts. I figure if some of them can walk around the campus barefooted, I could hardly be called out with wearing a kilt! I often wear my kilt on other days. Initially it raised some eyebrows from a few of the homophobes, but that has since diminished. Glad to see your dress code has flexibility for interpretation!!

This thread has a different spin on the usual kilted @ Walmart here. As I work at Walmart. My day started at my day job where I work as a manager of a gated community of active adults. My attire was a little nattier than my part time job at Walmart would be. My belt buckle shows St. Andrew on the X cross.

I took a extended lunch at the British Pub and toasted on patron Saint.



Job one down, I go home to walk Fiona and dress to the Walmart uniform policy. Dark navy shirt and kaki kilt. No, it doesn’t include kilt states kaki p@nts for men and women. Kaki skirts are allowed for women. I switched out my sgian dubh for a box cutter, Thorfin for SWK nylon cargo sporran. wing tips for casual walkers and off came the bowtie. No management has questioned my kaki kilt. In fact some of said it meets the uniform requirements.

When I arrived to clock in as I entered the back room one of the associates held the door for me as said in his best Scottish brogue, 'Aye, mate, Scotland the Brave!' After clocking in heading to my department, Assistant Manager Mark who was talking to two associates, saw me and said, 'Real men wear kilts!'

I had made up handouts that told about Scotland’s Patron Saint. So, when someone asked about why the kilt today, I gave them one. I gave them all away! I received many compliments for fellow workers and customers. A few stares and open mouths but more smiles and nods. Made two referrals to our local Scottish Society who didn’t know we had one and a number of interesting conversations with customers and employees who shared their Scottish roots. A good day, all and all!

First things first: Very nicely done all around! Both outfits look great.

Second, I worked for Wal-Mart for a while years ago, and I have to say those were miserable times. I am glad they let you wear the kilt. They're a big target for lawsuits, and my cynical view of the company makes me think they do it more out of a desire to avoid legal entanglements rather than to encourage cultural diversity. It's been nearly 10 years since I worked for them, and to this day I avoid those stores as much as possible.
