That's a very nice Christmas gift. And you got me thinking on one for my better half too. what is the measurements? Do you center the neck opening, or do you give more fabric to the backside than to the front?

It is two yards of fabric which is lots. The smudge you see near the centre of the circle in the second photo is the actual centre, but I thought it would look a little better if it were centred on the tartan. As a result the front is a little longer than the back, but since it's intended to be wrapped up around the shoulders, this should be fine. I wouldn't recommend trying to make the front much longer than the back since it just seems to naturally hang that way on a person. I used a small bread plate to draw the circle and that grew as I used more fabric to encompass the seam. Were I to do it again, I would make the 'V' neck about twice as long or even tear away some of the fabric since it likes to flip open revealing the inside. Be aware that you will be turning the fabric 90º from the selvedge for making a kilt so you will want to use the 'wrong' side of the fabric to get the twill to sit 'per fess' and match any kilt.
