I like the idea. It would be nice to have a campaign based tartan like for this that I wear -

I can also see how it would be a limited market.

    Jim

(But wouldn't that make a nice tartan and a very different one with all that tan )

Sorry to be a party pooper but why? If that then what about the dozens of other medals?

Someone's already done an unofficial Afghanistan tartan. Why not one each for those associated with; WW1, WW2, Korea, Bosnia, NI, Malaya, Borneo, Kosovo, regular forces, reserve forces, and so on and so on, the list is endless, and unfortunately Pandora's box is well and truly open. Sorry, rant over.

The one above is actually from Desert Storm.

As for why it's just something that kind of nice for those who have it. Not to belittle it but it would like a nicer version of the ball caps Vets wear. You could ask why have different ball caps for each war but we do.

Yes it could be a mess and I doubt it would happen but the genie is already out of the bottle. The US has a tartan, a lot of states have them (including my own), each branch of service has one, there are several subsets such as the Sea Bees (which I will get one day) and submariners.

Outside the military you have lots of tartans that honor an event such as the Pope's visit and the Royal engagement. You even have tartans that have meaning for one or two people.

Like I said I doubt it would happen but it would be cool to see something that has meaning made into a tartan to wear.

Actually, my purpose was not so much to determine whether the design is commercailly or technically feasible. My question was "Is it attractive?"

I've lately begun thinking about why some tartans appeal to me, while others do not. I'm beginning to conclude that , for me at least, a part of the "magic" of tartan is the unexpected juxtaposition of colors.

I tested that idea by taking a ribbon design that I personally do not care for, and replicating it as a tartan design. I liked the result and wanted the opinions of others so as to provide additional data upon which to theorize.

    Thanks!

Overall I think it is an attractive tartan. I too wonder if there would be enough of a demand to ever make it worth producing, but I like the way it looks.

There is another issue that I bring up only because it means something to me. I know there are different opinions about wearing tartans that you have no actual connection to, but when a tartan is designed based on an achievement like a medal that brings in another aspect. I would never wear such a tartan, but there is the school of thought that you can wear whatever you like and I would not want to see that minimize the meaning of such a tartan.

I realize I am getting to this thread sort of late, but thought I would offer another opinion.

First, to answer your question, I like the colors. I think they would look good as a tartan pattern and would make a fine kilt.

As for the availability issue and the "market demand" of others...I am not sure the willingness of others to get the same tartan is the point. If you enjoy the color pattern and feel comfortable wearing it, then go for it. Especially if it has a particular meaning to you (like a reflection of your service or honoring those with whom you have served).

I am ABSOLUTELY certain, however, that if you wanted some fabric in that tartan you could get a mill to produce it. It becomes a matter of cost, rather than the desire of others to also get this new would-be-orphaned tartan. That said, if you were to decide to get the pattern made into a kilt, I would take pride in knowing that you have a meaningful kilt that is a one-of-a-kind original. No better conversation piece...right?

Also, if you do produce that tartan...be sure to copyright it (if that is possible) Who knows, others may see it and want one made too!!

I think that would look sharp. And quite distinctive. Possibly with more of the tan to spread things out a bit more...
It seems like most of the tartans I've seen are either dark or bright, few that are just light.

In case anybody cares, here's a different take on the service-ribbon-turned-into-something-else idea.

    The Afghanistan campaign bar
