I'm wondering if I should notify The Toronto Police Pipe Band that their "Clan Ross" tartan is much too red and that maybe they should change over to a Nova Scotia or Antigonish tartan.

I realize that I am new to both kilt wearing and this forum myself, and do NOT in anyway claim to be an expert of any sort. But I can assure you that the Navy Tartan (that I have seen MANY times worn by members of the United States Navy) is predominantly blue. In fact, it is my intention to have that be my next kilt. I have only one kilt right now, but already look forward to my next one!!!
Best of luck and just remember, everyone has an opinion...take it at that.

Somebody already mentioned MacKay, the tartan I wear. Primarily blue and I'm not a cop either.
The non-kilted have more "information" and are far more weilling to dispense it than they should.
Which makes kilting EXACTLY like every other thing in life. The folks with the least information speak the loudest. Don't believe me? Stop by your local bar.
I wish I believed in reincarnation. Where's Charles Martel when you need him?

Let me just point out, there were blue tartans before there were police let alone police pipe bands.
You've been given a lot of good information on here but I'll back it up and add that some of the myths around various 'tartan rules' are absolutely baffling.

Oh no! Black Watch has blue in it too! Looks like there's going to be a big fight as to whom gets to wear what now!
All humor aside, Welcome to X-Marks from the Midlands of South Carolina from a NON-Scot, Blue Kilt wearin' transplant to S.C.
I've found that most relationships work best when no one wears pants.

The only violation in wearing any tartan would be wearing it backwards. Or below te knee. Or with pumps. Wear what you love...Love what you wear. Then post a picture.

I look at it this way..I am an American/Scot/Englishman/Welshman/Irish/Native American of about three tribes...all my forefathers were either kicked out of where they were for fighting for what they believed, in or for their freedom..I would be remiss if I didn't wear what I bloody well please
Really..My last name isn't Keith or Hamilton, but I am descended from them..George is my last name and is sept of Clan Gunn...so am I entitled to wear those tartans? I'm betting there are those who say I can't....I'm betting that like an entire nation of Scots...I'll tell em where to put it..
Wear wha' ye wan' laddie!
