Mix and Match?
I am looking to buy my first kilt. I don't really have the money for a true kilt right now. I am thinking about going with a sports kilt for starters. It's something I can afford and I'd like to see how much I wear it before making the investment. They don't carry the MacLachlan tartan but I would still like to sport my Scottish heritage. So I guess my question is can I wear the Campbell tartan and still wear my MacLachlan Kilt pin? Or should I get something like the Black Watch tartan?

To all intents and purposes, Campbell and the Black Watch are the same tartan. The Black Watch is called a universal tartan, meaning anyone can wear it.
Some thing I tell people all the time - When you wear the kilt, you become the expert, not the man looking at you. If you don't tell anyone they won't know.

I worried about this at first when I put my Cooper cap badge on my balmoral, most of the time I'm in a tartan kilt it's my Black Stewart SWK but no one has ever noticed the difference in clan or at least has never mentioned it.

MacLachlan Modern acrylic kilt $69.95 + shipping.
MacLachlan Hunting acrylic kilt $69.95 + shipping. (available in February)
Rufus, There have been mixed reports on doing business with this guy.
Bad reports to BBB
Good reports from my clan association (Clan MacLachlan Association of North America)
So this is informational only. Not an endorsement.
I have an order in with him for a MacLachlan Hunting tartan kilt.
I don't want to bore everyone or rehash things on the board so PM me if you want more details.

Ruffus--why not? I wear my Campbell kilt and sport a Bruce kilt pin for my wife's side of the family. If anyone asks, tell them you got permission from the online kilting community.
by the way...Welcome to the site!

Yes indeed! I "mix & match" that way often -- not wearing "some other clan's" tartan but wearing either one of "my" (Douglas) tartans or a non-clan tartan with either a Douglas cap badge on my balmoral or that of the Barony of Rachane (with permission of the current Baron as a Fellow of the Barony).
No one has ever, ever noticed or commented.

I often wear Paterson Family tartan kilts but wear my Maclaren clan badge as a kilt pin to show that I am part of the clan. Nobody has ever quizzed me about it, so my advice is to go for it.

Don't go with a sportkilt unless you will be playing sports in it. I ordered one for my first kilt and was extremely disappointed. Go for a company like usakilts or another company. Skye Highland outfitters has a 8 yard P/V kilt for under $200 look around but SportKilt is just not good unless every one else has a SK. But if your with guys wearing decent kilts you'll be embarrassed and not want to wear one again.

I agree with Cowher, SportKilts are great for their intended uses, but you could get a USA Kilts Casual made to measure for around what you might pay for a 'well optioned' SK.
Order of the Dandelion, The Houston Area Kilt Society, Bald Rabble in Kilts, Kilted Texas Rabble Rousers, The Flatcap Confederation, Kilted Playtron Group.
