If you do just hope he doesn't have the "this is my kilt stuff and I will wear all of it!" mindset that is popular over here

He is fairly new to the Kilt scene and I would rather make a grand impression upon everyone, to include the proper dress and details to further impress upon him that, being Scottish or Celt and wearing a Kilt can be for any event. Upon that I shall impose my questions or rather describe the outfit that I have chosen and see if any of the readers would change any of the options. A Blackwatch Kilt, dark green tweed jacket and waistcoat, light green shirt with black tie, dark green kilt hose with black flashes, ghillies, spats, sgian dubh, and a semi dress sporran. I also have a deep red waistcoat, red diced hose, red flashes, and the assortment of white shirts, traditional plaid, brooches, ect. Being the Wife's boss, and the Host, I don't want to out do him in dress, as this is not a black or white tie formal. I am however wearing my dark green rosette and brass kilt pin to close the deal. What... if any would you as a reader change or add ?
that outfit seems a bit dark to me(can we see a pic?) I would go with your waistcoat shirt no tie sporran and your red flashes. That should look smart but still not over dressed. Of course if everyone else will be in a polo shirt then you would want to be too.

Unless your going in full Number one's the spats will look out of place, go with the red flashes tho other wise with BW tartan you could look like the man in black .... you know too dark. If it is casual just go with the vest that way you will be smart but casual. Looking good when you playing but not outa place after and as you said you don't want to upstage the host,
Mind this is just my 2 pence worth

I should have stated earlier business casual attire...And he expressed his excitement as well as the statement that he will be kilted to the staff. He is fairly new to the Kilt community and has bought all forms of Kilt accoutrements (Duly being able to afford such). Knowing him, I will be underdressed wearing the outfit described above. He has just recently taken an interest in his geneology and what tartans his family is to wear, not to mention a Prince Charles jacket and waistcoat, a family of sporrans, custom made sgian dubh, diced hose, tweed jacket and waistcoat, ect. Also, I was invited, and offered to play the pipes for his benefit, accepting no payment (except Ale)... If the red Diced hose are worn, would it be appropriate to wear with the tweed, as they are usually worn with the doublet ?

Good point ! It's hard to out guess the Doctor type... I know he wears a tie even when working (being professional). I'll see if the better half can find out exactly how informal, and his attire for the evening to be on the safe side... I would send a pic, and get everyone's opinion, but unfortunately covering for another Officer today ! Try and get one posted this evening !

That was my first thought as well.
It all sounds a bit too matchy to me (all the different shades of green). Ditch the black flashes in favour of red if nothing else (as well as the spats). Go with the ghillies, or a nice pair of Oxfords if you have them.
Just my 2 cents
Be sure to post pictures!

I wouldn't wear diced hose with tweed. Swap the green shirt for white (or light blue... not beige on... be... I mean, green on green on green!) ;)
No spats.
And if it were me, I'd always wear a tie with a waistcoat. (bow with a low cut one, four-in-hand with high cut one).
Green jacket-waistcoat
Light Blue shirt
Deep coloured tie (claret/brick/navy/striped?)
no belt
Sporran
Green socks
Red garters
Shoes, as you like (oxfords/ghillies)
My 2c
Cheers,
Michael

I'm not too keen on all of that green together myself. For example, I have worn the following:
Black Watch kilt, Lovat Blue hose with red flashes, black wingtips, black day sporran on hangers off of kilt belt and white cable sweater
or
Black Watch kilt, Oatmeal hose with green flashes, black wingtips, black day sporran on hangers off of kilt belt and Navy Blue sweater
or
Black Watch kilt, black hose with red flashes, black wingtips, black day sporran and Burgundy colored dress shirt
Being a new kiltie, I am a bit limited on my choices for some things and I only have one tank for the cool months. But the idea is that while nothing actually matches anything, the colors do compliment each other.
I've found that most relationships work best when no one wears pants.

Point taken on the green on green on green. The waistcoat is more beige than anything and compliments the green tweed nicely. It was a mismatch of items bought throughout the years, but look as though they were well thought out in assembly... White shirt it will be, green hose and red flashes. Ghillies and no spats. Sorry I haven't had the time to post any pics... Too many stupid people, too little time !
