Airport Security and your Kilt
I read somewhere a semi-serious suggestion that one challenge over-zealous airport security officials by wearing one's kilt to the airport. They might frisk you wearing pants but wouldn't dare if you wore your kilt "correctly".
Has anybody tried or is thinking of trying it?
Bear in mind that the guy who said "Don't touch my junk" when about to be frisked ended up fined and missing his flight.
At the same time - and there's video evidence to prove it - people have boarded planes wearing burkas - and didn't have their faces matched to their passports, so there are double standards out there.

I've flown in my kilt flew out of Bristol, I got wanded because i set off the metal detector but there were no problems. Aslong as your not cheeky and understand that the guys at security have an important job you should be fine.
Just my tuppence

Yep
As posted previously, I wore a traditional kilt home from southern Ca. over the Thanksgiving holiday. Not in any attempt to protest, or "get over on" security, I just happened to be wearing a kilt that day. I put all of my typical items in the bin, (sporran, belt, watch, shoes etc) and set the detector off with the kilt buckles (only two buckles on that particular kilt). I was subjected to a thorough, but very polite, search by authorities. It took maybe 5 minutes total, and was quite painless.
I personally don't see a lot of value to trying to get over on the security systems in place. I understand their questionable efficacy, but don't believe they are the result of some high level conspiracy to rescind our civil liberties.
Be smart about what you try to board with, and all should be fine. I am confident that much more time and energy is spent in fretting about the search, and how to get around it, than is actually spent on the search itself.
Happy travels

After my experience at the Las Vegas Airport, I will NEVER again fly kilted. Not only was I fondled at eh airport by a tsa putz that was showing off for the incoming shift, but my wife had an inflight emergency and wearing the kilt was not conducive to assisting her and the flight crew. But, we were the first ones off the aircraft and every one got to see my kilt.
My wife is fine. probably just an anxiety attack. She was checked out by emts and released into my custody.

There have been several threads talking about Kilts and Flying between 11/1/2010 and 1/11/2011
A search for "Airport Security" will pull those up :-)
And if you're thinking it will 'save' you to wear a kilt, try taking a look at the following blog post on Ars Technica:

I've been on two (four if you count layovers) flights since being kilted full time, and I will always (if it can be helped) fly kilted. In my Utilikilt, that is.
I know UKs aren't a favorite around here, but the Survival style makes security a BREEZE to pass through, what with the detatchable cargo pockets and all.
I put my wifes and my wallet, our sons IDs, passports, phones, EVERYthing in them. Snap off for security, snap on for boarding.
I worried about the pockets snapping off for a random passerby to acquire, but after testing it at home, it's nearly impossible to just tear them off. One would have to deliberately and tediously unsnap them.
As for traditional kilts, I probably won't ever wear one of them to an airport. That's what my UK is for.
Back to the topic at hand, though: I've never had a problem w/ security trying to get "frisky" with me due to the kilt. The snaps on the UK don't have enough/the appropriate type of metal to set the detectors off, either, it seems.

One wonders how women in skirts have managed to get through security and on to airplanes without any fuss lo these many years.
Actually one doesn't. They just get on with it.
