They're probably referring to the MOD style sweaters worn with the kilt in the kilted Scottish regiments in Scotland for many years. This style has become extremely popular with civilian pipe bands here in the USA. It's even spawned a slang name for a certain type of pipe band, a "sweater band".

Check out this seller on ebay. I bought a surplus blackwatch kilt and was very happy.

These are a little more subdued, but here are some from LL Bean:

I got one of these in blue which goes well with my Elliot kilt (very useful on cool days while manning the clan tent at the Games).

I also have my old USMC wooly-pully that I occasionally wear.

I bought a used MOD sweater from Sportsmans Guide for Christmas. It is well made and not too used. It did have some MOD insignia patches on the sleeve, which I removed as I am neither in the British Army nor did I achieve those insignias.
I agree with TheScot--order big, mine fits like a glove.

I have one of those arriving tomorrow, thanks to seeing your post.

For anyone who likes this design but doesn't like wool (which seems a bit incongruous for folks who like kilts), Orvis has the same design in cotton with a choice of four colors:

So okay, it arrived yesterday and I like it. Howsomever, they included a hard-copy store catalog which had the following items which weren't listed when I placed my order but are now, and some of you may find them worth checking out:

    Scottish Wool Walking Sweater:

    British Wool Walking Sweater:

    Scottish Borders Cardigan:

    Scottish Wind-Resistant Wool Cardigan:

    Men's Irish Sweater Vest:

All are in the "Sweaters" section at http://shop.nationalgeographic.com/n...?navAction=pop, and they all look pretty kilt-worthy to me.

BTW, I believe I got my closer-fitting (you know, for night raids), olive-drab woolly pully at my local U.S. Army Surplus store.

Yes, very nice. The Scottish Wool Walking Sweater is a very nice color. What would you say that is reddish-brown?
