Doublet Idea... am I off my rocker or on to something?

First, this was a VERY quick photoshop job of what seems to be the only pic in existence of a Montrose being worn in this way, so go easy on me. I only wanted to see roughly what it would look like.

This was sort of inspired by some of the white mess dress uniforms some lucky individuals still get to enjoy. Traditionally, IIRC, there was a time when the highland regiments had white jackets for warm weather and what not... but I digress.




White doublet, gold buttons, perhaps with the inside of the breasts being a different color. I'm still undecided on that particular feature, but I've seen similar things to this before and it looks pretty good if executed well.

I've coupled it with the MacDonald Dress tartan as well, which is what I'd want to wear with it.


So what says the rabble... do-able, or would the Lord MacDonald banish me from the clan?

You know, I think if it were well tailored it would look wonderful. (Though I'd go for antiqued brass buttons just because that's my personal taste.)

If there's one think I've learned about highland attire it's that no matter what anyone says, if a garment it well made and of good quality and fit, AND you are confident enough to wear it, it looks great.

I think it would look pretty slick if properly executed. The contrasting color inside is a really good idea. And I have to agree with Arlen, that antiqued buttons would look better, whether silver or brass, but that's just my personal taste.

I think it would also look good in black or maybe red, but white would be a standout. I can't remember the last time I saw someone wearing a white jacket!

Well, today, I saw my first advertisement for a white Prince Charlie and I'm ambivalent (scroll down.) I do think your idea of contrasting lapels is a good one.

I also agree with the antique button idea... I think bright, shiny, gold might be a bit too much.

I'd love to have this thing made this year, but it might have to wait a bit.

I like the look of the doublet worn like that, and I think that the contrasting lining colors would look great too, even with a black jacket.

Er, yeah... it looks good, but there are a couple of teensie-weensie problems with white jackets.

1) They show every smudge and stain, and that includes red wine, sauces, and gravy.

2) After dry cleaning they may look dingy, or possibly yellow.

3) White civilian dinner jackets (as opposed to military uniforms) are normally worn only in late spring and summer, and most Scottish dinners and balls seem to be held in fall or winter.

It's a great looking jacket, but I'm just not sure how practical it might be in the long run, something you might want to consider before spending the money on having one made.

I like the idea in principle, but as MoR pointed out, there are some issues. The montrose on a fit individual cannot be beat for 'dash'.
Perhaps another very striking, but non-white colour... A sky blue velvet with a deep claret or sanguine red lining?

As an aside, I cannot see a white mess jacket now without being reminded of Jeeves and Wooster, where Jeeves continually belittles Bertie's white mess jacket and tries to guarantee it's demise/departure/non-presence.
