Expansion of discussion on white kilt garments

The white kilt thread from a few days ago really intrigued me. I know a lot of people wear kilts for weddings, but something I've never seen is someone doing this and combining it with the affinity for white that a lot of wedding fashion tends to have, and that thread got me thinking...

Has any one ever gone fully black-tie or semi-formal with a white kilt *and* white kilt jacket or doublet? Or would that be just way too weird to work? What about a tartan kilt and a white jacket? I'm thinking the contrast between the two could be amazing - but you only ever see the jackets in dark colors or possibly light tweed. Is there a reason for this?

I myself am getting married this summer and I'm sort of poking around at the dress options. Sorry if my n00bishness is showing.

i remember seeing a thread a looooong time ago that showed a kilt version of the grey "morning suit." Not exactly white, but a very formal look to be sure.

    *wanders off to find it*

I'm not personally a fan of wearing a lot of white but apparently it is sometimes done in the kilted world.

Here is a modern, white kilt outfit:

And a white mess dress jacket, worn in the Australian Army:
    - Justitia et fortitudo invincibilia sunt
    - An t'arm breac dearg

Well, it's good to know I'm not a total freak for even considering it! I want to say thanks to CMcG for the photo - it's good to see how that looks before sinking a ton of money into the idea.

I'm thinking the full white looks nice but perhaps a bit bland. I think it's a safe bet I'll steer from the white kilt, but I may still consider the jacket. Are the white hose safe if the jacket is white? Opinions?

And yes, I've tried all manner of search words trying to get some help with this from Google images and it just wasn't happening. Thanks to those of you who've tried, though.

While I was married wearing a white suit, I doubt that I would repeat the exercise.
That is to say, were I to marry again (I am happily married, and have been for 34 years), I might wear a white jacket, but I would definitely wear a tartan kilt.
And if I were to wear a white jacket, I might also wear white hose. But otherwise I would steer very well clear of white hose.
    Regards,
    Mike

If one lived in the tropics and wore the kilt quite often, I suppose a white linen mess jacket/kilt jacket might come in handy for black tie events, but in this modern age there is a wonderful invention called air conditioning, which makes the indoors feel quite pleasant! Have a doublet made of lighter weight fabric. You could have a linen kilt jacket made up in a tan colour for day wear...very good idea actually

I cannot give an opinion about a white kilt because--thank God--I have never seen one! Nonetheless, I can opine that white hose are NEVER acceptable!

Actually, I've been tossing around the idea of a white doublet, myself. I'll dabble a bit in Photoshop to see how it'll look, but I have high hopes. I think, when done tastefully, white evening wear can look quite nice. I'd point out the formerly authorized Marine Corps dress white uniforms.... goodness, I joined in the wrong era.

I also agree that full white would look bland. It also might make you look like you're trying to make some sort of statement, rather than just look good.

On the white hose, tread carefully friend, last time I commented positively on them, a group non-white hose clad xmarkers appeared on my doorstep with torches and pitch forks. I finally lost them in the woods, but only just. It wasn't pretty.

Seriously though, I think the hose would be a good place to add a splash of color. The pic posted above by CMcG with the black hose looks pretty good with the otherwise white outfit. Or, if you're wearing a colorful kilt, wear something that closer matches that, OR even the cross hatch hose. For my white doublet idea, I was thinking of pairing it with something like the MacDonald Dress Modern tartan, so red and white hose would be right at home.

In a kilt hire shop in Glasgow in 2004 I spotted a more extreme example.

It was a large poster-sized photo on the wall of a wedding couple, the bride and groom both in all white.

I'll never forget the groom's outfit:

    white Prince Charlie
    white shirt and tie
white kilt (apparently the same fabric as the jacket)
white fur sporran with white tassels
    white hose
    white flashes
and... wait for it... black ghillies!!!

oh to get SO close to hideous perfection only to fall short!!

SOMEBODY must have made white ghillies at some point...

LOL D'oh! They must have had lot of trouble finding the white shoe. Looking at that outfit would be like driving down the road on a nice sunny day and then suddenly crashing into a brick wall that popped up out of nowhere. Heheheh.
