Researching the USPS Kilts for Carriers resolution

    Good evening all,

While researching the 'Kilts for Carriers' resolution proposed by Dean Peterson for a term paper (our assigned theme was 'advocacy for a cause,' and I thought this would be a fun topic, as it has proven to be!) I was bothered by the 'cliffhanger' ending of the story, in which Mr. Peterson said "...I'm taking this to the next convention in 2010..."

After doing a great deal of searching, I came across this NALC newsletter

    http://nalc.org/news/precord/Article...convention.pdf

in which the following item appeared:

    The Executive Council’s
    disapproval of
    Resolution 13 was
    upheld following a
    teller vote, by a vote
    of 2,627 to 1,222.
    This resolution had
    urged the NALC to
    approve utility kilts
    for purchase
    through the uniform allotment program.

    //

Not a happy ending for the story, but, as a kilt-wearer and a former USPS employee, I admire his determination!

Thanks for the follow up! For a radical idea he succeeded in getting a fair number of support.

    Best regards,

Some of my NALC branch officers at work think it will pass in 2011, based upon the ever growing support in evidence at the last two conventions....

I happened to be talking to my mail carrier just the other day about this (when he delivered yet another kilt to my house.) He would love to wear a kilt when he is doing his rounds but the resolution keeps getting shot down. He seemed to think that the even if the resolution is passed there are many other (management) hurdles to overcome before we will see USPS carriers in kilts.

Yeah, this fight isn't over yet. I would love to see my local carrier in a kilt!

The problem is, being a solid, dark color, these kilts will end up looking like skirts on men. This will offend customers. As much as I love kilts, employee uniforms should not be offending customers.

Postal employees already get to wear shorts and comfortable footwear in their jobs.

Techically, all postal employees should be in long pants (male and female) and steel toed safety footwear. For some reason the USPS and Canada Post don't have to follow workplace safety legislation like the rest of us when it comes to clothing.

I think in some Towns with a Scottish bent, that having USPS wear kilts would be fantastic...

As a letter carrier, I would very much like to wear a kilt on the job.

The only problem I see is that Canada Post's uniform looks far less formal than it did 30 years ago, and I can well imagine kilts worn in a sloppy way that would reflect badly both on the Corporation as well as on the traditional image imparted by the kilt.

EPITAPH: Decades from now, no one will know what my bank balance looked like, it won't matter to anyone what kind of car I drove, nor will anyone care what sort of house I lived in. But the world will be a different place, because I did something so mind bafflingly eccentric that my ruins have become a tourist attraction.

The UPS guys I have seen have safety toed shoes.

That said, I suppose UPS gets away with it because CP and USPS do it.

Any other industry would require more stringent uniforms for safety.
