    Why does anybody wear underwear?

Well, once you get past "because my mother makes me", I expect most people wear underwear to avoid direct contact between their skin and their outer garments. This may be to avoid getting an expensive garment dirty or to avoid having a scratchy garment irritate you- and now and then, to avoid giving people a "free shot". It seems to me that any of these reasons might be applied to kilt wearing, at different times or maybe all at once.

Like somebody above, I do figure it is a good idea to select your kilt underwear with the assumption that it will be seen. That way, the kilt checkers get something for their troubles. If you are out on the town, then your wee prizewinner may be what you want them to see. If you are working or going to church, you might consider that it is certainly possible to fall down and land the wrong way. And the point about the wind is well taken. More and more often, I find myself going for a pair of tartan boxers in a contrasting sett, probably because I don't have any of the SpongeBob ones and I lost that pair of grippies with the woman's hand printed on the front.

By the way, I am always naked under my clothes.

I think the problem was the tone of the poll. If it was worded differently, where the person was trying to get input to refute those around him (those who said the non-regimental aren't doing it correctly), it might have come off differently. However, the way it is written is the same as we've all heard many times from outsiders.

Some may have reacted a bit to sensitively, but I also understand the frustration of getting asked "that same old question" a few too many times.

The same boring question achieves the same response."What do I wear under my kilt? My shoes! It's been my experience that women are more inquisitive than men on this issue. Just my experience.

Sorry for resurrecting this one, I've been away for a while.

If I might add a female perspective. I just been reading this thread and whilst women jokingly are interested, its not really something that the average spouse or partner of a kilty thinks about overmuch.

In Scotland there is something of a 'culture' in this regard (I won't call it a 'tradition' because tradition is a complicated thing) which my man follows. I don't mind at all. But I do mind OTHER women who don't ask permission first, joke or no joke, if you catch my drift!

    Change of mind.

I had not read most of the replies in this thread since my earlier response. I have since voted on the thread, and my reason for changing my mind and doing so is this:

This forum was a great resource for me when I started kilting. While the regimental or no question was never an issue for me, many other issues were resolved here, and it IS an issue for some. Therefore, my kilted brethren have convinced me that this is an appropriate occasion to ask "the question", in the spirit of education, and therefore it is appropriate to answer, and I have done so.

Exactly; and, there's my answer. Although, like OC Richard, there are piping events and other scenarios in which unknown situations make me take the cautious route.

I like my Lucky Charms cereal boxers that way I can answer -

"Nothing but me lucky charms and they're always after me lucky charms" with the appropriate accent.

Also have the tee that says "Feeling lucky?"
