    How about a music thread?

well I appologise if this has been done before, but i went back as far as 2009 and didnt see it, so here goes.

Name 5 Celtic musical artists off the top of your head (U2 doesn't count - they sold out after War).

Name 1 Celtic album that you would recommend everyone listen to.

Pick a country and name a Celtic song that should be used as the national anthem of that country.

Okay I guess I get to start:

    5 musical artists

    The Corries
    Marillion/Fish
    Runrig
    Dougie Maclean
    Capercaillie

    1 Celtic album

    Craigie Dhu - Dougie Maclean

    New Scottish national anthem

Scotland will flourish - The Corries

I notice everyone your list, I think, is Scottish. But you used the word "Celtic" and I'll stick to that.

It's a tough question, my favourite Celtic musicians... but here goes:

    1) Jerry Holland (RIP, Cape Breton fiddler/composer)
    2) Gordon Walker (Highland piper)
    3) Kevin Burke (Irish fiddler)
    4) Matt Molloy (Irish fluteplayer)
    5) Paddy Keenan (uilleann piper)

(The above are based on their solo playing, as you asked for artists, not bands.)

Top Celtic album... boy that's tough too. So difficult that I'll list five!

    1) Master Cape Breton Fiddler (Jerry Holland)
    2) Out Of The Wind Into The Sun (The Bothy Band)
    3) Kentigern (Kentigern, the short-lived Scottish band)
    4) World Pipe Band Championships 1994
    5) a' sireadh spors (Dr Angus MacDonald, Highland piper)

    Scottish National Anthem
I'll have to stick with Flower Of Scotland... so nice when sung at football and rugby matches.

    Five Musical Artists:
Deanta (Mary Dillon's singing voice is quintessential!)
    The Chieftains
    The Corries
    Altan
    Run Rig

    One Celtic Album:
"Ready For the Storm" (by Deanta)

    Scottish National Anthem:
I'm not a citizen of Scotland, so it's not my place to say - it's up to the Scots to decide if they even want one. (But, if I were, I'd pick, "The Flower of Scotland")

For those who'd like some proof of Mary's fine voice:

    A good one!

I think that's the album that has an uilleann pipes solo piece composed by Enya (no vocals).

I can't think of the name of that piece now, but I transcribed it off the album and I play it all the time when I'm playing background music at a wedding or whatever. People love it. I have chords written on my music, forming a "lead sheet", and I've performed it with harpists and keyboardists many times.

How about "Hail Caledonia" as a new National Anthem?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q4BNkugkYM

Seriously this clip makes me laugh, the very camp introducer reminds me of Charles Hawtrey from the Carry On films!
