I'm not familiar with the hooch you asked about but I usually make mine with bourbon since I'm not a Jack Daniels fan. I really don't see any reason that just about any decent whiskey couldn't be a substitute. Rum might work too but it could be a little too sweet depending on what rum you use. I think sticking to whiskey is a good call.
Its certainly a drink that can sneak up on you. You think you are okay...then stand up and figure out that you aren't doing as well as you thought.

That may be one reason why bars wayyy back (the drinking establishments, not pubs or traveler's inns, etc. that served food) didn't have seats. Men (and some women, where admitted) could drink a few, then stagger home. If they had been seated, they would have had to stand first to leave. If they lost their balance, other patrons would possibly spill their own bevvies, slosh onto others clothing, etc. Knowing this, people would likely imbibe less, thus causing the establishment to lose a small portion of their income.
(Another reason for lack of seating is so the bar could squeeze in a few more patrons.)

Apple Cider with a shot of whiskey (maybe more than a single shot?)...sounds perfect! And dangerous...

I heard a story in Dublin a few years back that the origins of the drink began when there was a brewers strike in Ireland and the only thing left to them was hard cider. The story has it that a batch comming from England went extra hard and was a great success and given the name "Jonny Jump Up". May not be true but should be.

Lack of seating might also be related to the actual cost of seats, a real luxury in the most modest of homes let alone public venues.

The Celtic Tigers sing the song too.
Alcohol is alcohol is alcohol is alcohol. Same alcohol in all alcoholic beverages. Only the carrier vehicle is different.
Kind of like an egg. Put the egg in a meat loaf, or pancake batter, or a cake, or a smoothie and its still an egg.
Same alcohol in whisky as in bourbon...just different "juice" holding the alcohol. Mix as your taste prefers.

What cider do you all recommend? I am partial to Magner's but have yet to venture out.

It doesn't matter much...whatever tastes good to you. Honestly, even tending bar I used a generic powdered mix. In fact , I'm having one right now with Makers Mark and WalMart storebrand hot apple cider powdered mix. Classy, huh?
Of course, it's probably not technically a Johnny Jump Up, but it's pretty darn good!

Woodchuck (from Vermont) and Strongbow (from the UK) are both pretty good ciders. Woodchuck comes in a variety of flavors - I'm partial to the amber, myself.
Experiment and find your favorite!
