I wore a kilt to college, and will again soon. One teacher asked me to stand up and talk about it at the beginning of class after he said I must have lost a bet, lol. Other than that it was an uneventful day.

I attend a community college and I frequently wear the kilt to my classes. It's nothing special. Just a normal day with maybe a little extra attention from my female classmates.

Go ahead and wear it, but be ready to answer lots of questions.

    Which college do you attend?

How about a kilted college experience from the OTHER perspective?

When I was in my undergrad, many, many moons ago (long prior to my own kilted adventures) we had one fellow who would occasionally come to class kilted. It wasn't an everyday thing for him, but perhaps once or twice in a semester. While he would take the occasional, casual ribbing, (as is part of ANY college experience), it was all good-natured, and after the first few times wearing it, I don't think anyone thought it peculiar anymore.

I remember asking him why, the first time I saw him wear it, if he was attending some special function or event. I can't even recall his exact response, as it was so mundane and casual, it wouldn't be worthy of mental note -- but he just indicated that he was expressing his cultural heritage, and that no, there was no specific reason other than the fact that he felt like wearing it.

For my own part, I lived in a very international dorm, with students from over 80 different countries. It was the Burmese students who got me onto sarongs, and that's the way I'd walk around residence. I treated all public places in the residence hall as my own living room, so pajamas, bare feet, sarongs, you name it, were fine in my books. Once I ran into a group of young, first year Korean girls on my way to the laundry room, who upon seeing me unbifurcated, broke down into fits of hysterical laughter, but I too remained relatively unmolested, and when asked "why" I wore what I did, I just responded: "Because it's comfortable. The Burmese are onto something here. You should try it."

Funny thing, the Burmese students themselves never gathered the courage to wear their ethnic clothing outside their own apartment walls... The same way here in Japan, when I walk the streets wearing my Sri Lankan clothes, the local Sri Lankans think it's awesome but they themselves don't dare do it. Odd. :-) But anyway, I digress.

Personally, my advice would be to wear whatever the heck you want at college. If I were to do it all over again, you'd better believe I'd be walking around kilted... But no more or less often than I do now, as for me, the kilt is a clothing and fashion option, just like anything else in my closet, including jeans. I like to live a well-balanced life... :-)

As a kilted part-time teacher at a local college, I say go for it. Many will stare, some will comment, and even more will admire from afar. You'll meet a lot of new people, and occasionally get free coffee at the student union.

Well... no guarantee on the free coffee.

When I was in college, there was a large international student population. I just can't imagine a place where a kilt would have been more accepted than college. Go for it! I suspect it will be well received.
