Sometimes you just get thrown for a loop..

I was at the gas station yesterday and while i was in line i heard from behind me someone ask where the highland games were in a very proper brogue. I turned around to see an African American woman standing there checkkng out my auld scotland kilt. Now I'm used to people doing their best to imitate a scottish accent (usually sounds more like the leprechan on the lucky charms cereal commercial), when the light heartedly ask whats the deal with the kilt. This woman had it flawless though....Anyway, I explained why I was kilted, etc., and as she chatted with me, her brogue was most definitely there. So the story goes that she American, but her father was in the Navy and relocated the family to Scotland when she was 7. She stayed for school all the way through high school and married her boyfriend right out of school and has stayed in Scotland for 30 years! She was especially interested in the Box Pleated kilt and its resurgence, although admitted very little knowledge of kilts and their styles despite having lived almost all her life in Scotland.
Anyway, I always love it when something or someone comes along and throws my unintended ethnocentricities for a loop!

Last year I overheard a group of Asians talking with their Asian-Canadian relatives. The foreigners had unmistakable South African accents. I was forced to realise that I think nothing of an Asian with a Canadian accent, but the S. African accent struck me as odd which of course is silly. My cultural bias was revealed to me.

A lot of the West Indians have Scottish in them and appreciate the kilt.

A lot of Ugandan Asians came here when forced out by Idi Amin - I got so used to their accent that I was rather baffled hearing those coming directly from the Far East.

A good friend of mine is Filipino and Korean but grew up in Germany. He sounds like Sgt Shultz and looks a lot like Jacky Chan. He gets a lot of strange looks but laughs about it every chance he gets.

When we studied the gold rushes in year eight we learned the story of an entrepreneur who was chinese. He made it to Australia and after the gold ran out he made friends with a Scottish squatter and learned English from him.

The funny part is when he moved from Victoria to Sydney there was an announcement in the newspaper about an oriental gentleman who dresses very smartly and speaks like a highlander.

I would love to see that. Especially because at that time the Chinese were known for maintaining their identity and fashions. That would have sent everyone's senses looping! :rolf:

My dad knew a guy from Connemara who spoke with an American accent -because he had learned English over there.

Maybe that's where the idea for the Starburst commercials came from!
