I would guess a round bottom flask is less likely to be left behind on a counter or table or other flat surface. Just a guess.

Except most are actually flattened on the bottom. At least the 6-ouncer I generally carry is.

I'm lucky enough to have a hip flask that fits into an attachment on my belt with the Clan Montgomery crest engraved on it. Leaving my sporran free to hold my phone, wallet, etc.etc.
But to answer your question, I believe they are designed to fit flat into the sporran without taking up excess space, and rounded so as not to tear through the leather from the constant movement.

This one gets my vote for "most comprehensively succinct response".

There's already a solution to the problem of transporting 1/2 gallon of hooch.

Now, let's solve THIS dude's problem.

I have an old, round, cloth-covered, aluminum canteen from the Boy Scouts; does that count?
Was in the Cub Scouts for a couple of years as a kid...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…
Yes, I have squirrels in my brain…

But the round contents are . . .
I purchased a lovely round flask in Inverness last summer. My dear wife (forgive her - she was born in beautiful Germany and is a wine drinker) asked me how it could possibly have a Celtic cross on it for liquor. I assured her that it was to contain Holy Water. (Chemical formula: H2Oly)

With a round flask its easier to make it appear empty when pouring a drink for someone you're only pretending to like....
