Ran into this with food before. Sometimes the name has nothing to do with the food. French fries were from Belgium (though they do speak french) as far as I understand it made popular by WWII vets. Same as pizza.

Add: Pizza being made popular by vets, not that it's from Belgium. From what I've read it is a Mediterranean dish back in Greece as well as Italy.

Mmmmm, Monte Cristo! Topped with a drizzle of raspberry syrup. The best of all worlds, cheesy, salty, and just a bit of sweet.

The one exception would be fast-food fries (which I don't eat anymore), which don't even taste like potatoes, and then ketchup will help disguise the "cardboardy-food-service-premade-prefrozen" taste.

french toast condiments
My brother puts ketchup on his eggs...so not a far stretch in my mind doing the same with french toast...but i'll take mine with copious quantities of strawberry preserves...always have and always will.

That's one of my favorite things about making haggis at home-
left over haggis, potatoes and a fried egg for breakies the next day.

Growing up, my mother and her family ate french toast with ketchup or HP sauce, the reasoning being that it was merely toast with the eggs cooked on it. I gather than my grandmother didn't add cinnamon or nutmeg to her egg batter.
And I do recall myself and every one of my siblings staring at my mom as though she'd grown a second head when she told us that. Every so often she'll eat her french toast that way. I think it's mostly just to see our faces when she does.

Another belgian thing to go with the fries is mayonaise... and you get some very strange looks asking for mayo with fries in the US...

I think I will have to asure Tony that I am with him on this one, never have I heard of such a noble food being treated in such fashion as to have syrup debase its noble taste...lol. That said as I have such a sweet tooth I am inclined to test this out, just so that I can at least say I know what I am talking about, (which would probably be a first for me).
How do you disperse an angry Scottish mob?
Nae bother - just take up a collection.
