thoughts on tartan vest to go with Black jacket

I have a kilt made from the original run that was woven in wool, and I'm getting a box pleated kilt made along with the vest.

Didn't mean specifically tartan waistcoat, but was there a particular jacket traditional to the double breasted waiscoat in general.

I've seen them worn with double breasted suit coats and tailcoats. Personally I want one of these, tailored similar to a Prince Charlie:

That would look good, especially getting away from the PC.

I was just talking to Matt on this very thing, his thoughts, right off, were the Sheriffmuif, which I really like, though it will be a long time before I have the cash to go there.

What about that old style of tapestry material, the stuff they used for the carpet bags, that might make a fine waistcoat as well.

Nighthawk, I do like the regency coat- do I understand correctly that you would chop it into a PC? You might tone down the tapestry just the tiniest bit by making the sleeve treatments and the tail facings in plain black. I am not sure I'd want to defend the idea that it is traditional, but I like it very much.

Can you tell us how wide the repeat is on that tartan? I know it takes more fabric, but I think the large sett might be just the thing to stand up to the tapestry without being too busy...

One cautionary note: do not be surprised to find that you either wear the tapestry PC all of the time, or very rarely. It will not fit in the middle. You can make it a signature piece or you can save it for very special occasions, but chances are very good that you will not just put it on now and then... I think you will wear the vest a lot, though, and I think it will look good with almost any open doublet or jacket.

No sir, I would not chop it up into a PC- just shorten the tails to the same length as a PC. I would never call it traditional or try to pass it off as such. As I've said on numerous occasions, I'm not Scottish- my Grandmother was. I like to work within the general framework of tradition while at the same time not being tied down to them. I strive to develop my own style while keeping tradition alive, if that makes any sense at all.

As to the repeat... I have no idea. I would measure it, but the kilt I have is wool, and the waistcoat will be PV, so I'm sure there will be some differences in the sett.

I've seen many, many double-breasted tartan evening waistcoats. Not a big deal. Really.
