Senera is from Spotsylvania! Click here.

EDIT: Unfortunately, I jumped the gun, and the winner Foxcliffe 'Hickory' Wind hails from Warrenton, VA. Congrats, Hickory!

The Best in Show judge, whose first language is not English, says, "Scottish Deerhound ... is exactly the same like I studied in the standard that was about 150 years ago. Outstanding dog. Moving and type was super. All the others were wonderful."

    Cool!

It's nice to see a breed other than the usual _____ (fill in the blank) win for a change.

Now if my beloved Rough & Smooth Collies would join the winners circle once again.

I watched the "Sight and Scent" Hound division the first night with my son and we both thought the Scottish Deerhound was very regal and the likely winner of the hound group, except for its rarity. Was not surprised when he did win. Missed the rest of the show but am pleased with the outcome. He is a beautiful dog. Surprising that both the group and show judges were so well versed in the criteria for a relatively "obscure" breed that they recognized near perfection. But quite pleased. yes quite.

Ern, do you know if "the champion" was at the Meadows games last year? I can remember seeing a couple of the breed there.

I watched the Westminister Dog Show the last couple of nights. I first saw the Scottish Deerhound Hickory in the hound group. Previously, I knew nothing about the breed. After watching Hickory win the hound group, I looked up the breed and its attributes. VERY cool dog - Hickory and breed. I'm glad Hickory was able to win the Best in Show award.

Beautiful animal! Hopefully the new found popularity and fame will not ruin the breed as it has with others.

Although beautiful and graceful and so well mannered I doubt there will be a run on the breeders due to the sheer size of the lovely animal-----most households in the US at least do not go for dogs bigger than a lab, and these guys are definitely bigger than a lab. I would think this animal, like the greyhounds we used to have, deserve a sizable yard for exercising, and to allow its owner the regular opportunity to observe that graceful stride in full out action. Scottish Deerhounds are not likely to be bred for anything other than show dogs, so should keep pure to their designated standard, which from my understanding is at least 150 years old.
