Isn't the word 'sporran' Gaelic for purse? Just wondering.

Yes, but it's not Gaelic for "Women's Handbag"

Personally, I'm with Rocky et al on the purse issue. A sporran look like a sporran, and I had seen a few purses that looked like sporrans, but few sporrans that looked like a purse. (Well, there are a couple, but I won't call them out.)
If there's someone out there who needs an inexpensive sporran, I can sell 'em one today that'll work fine for 25 bucks. It's not a great sporran, but it works.

I agree that a proper sporran is best for wear with a modern kilt, which is why I made sure to buy one when I bought my kilt from Rocky. But when it comes to costuming, such as ren faire garb, there's room for some leeway. My profile pic shows the highland garb I wear to the PA Ren Faire. The "sporran" is actually something I found on a Goodwill store purse rack many years ago. It's composed of a leather front piece, back piece/flap and gusset, with a leather thong thats loops around a piece of antler for closure. The strap is braided leather that looks exactly like a modern braided leather sporran belt. I cut slits in the back to thread the strap through, and it has served me well for years.
Granted, I was very lucky to find something that was constructed very much like a rustic sporran, and required very little conversion... I would not have attempted it otherwise. The purse in the OP's pics just doesn't seem rustic enough.

A few years ago while on holiday, I bought a leather bum bag to hold valuables while out walking in the sun and wearing shorts. I found that this fits great as a sporran when I wear my leather kilt although it sits up a bit higher than your normal sporran but I like it

Speaking as a woman, I wouldn't like that bag as a purse...probably why it was at the thrift store! As for wearing it as a sporran...go for it! If it doesn't look goofy when you wear it, why not? Especially for casual wear...though I do agree with Rocky, at least for formal occassions. But what the heck, I have cheap fashion shoes and expensive work shoes...

Now here's a little twist to this whole thing:
Around 25 years ago a piper friend found, in the purse section of an ordinary Department Store, several actual Scottish-made sporrans being sold as purses!
This is well before Pakistani sporrans flooded the market, and these were very nice SEALSKIN evening sporrans, three tassels, silverplate Celtic cantles, stamped REAL LEATHER MADE IN SCOTLAND.
They had ordinary sporran chainstraps. In short, they were ordinary sporrans in every way, but being sold as purses!
He bought one. They were fairly inexpensive as I recall, around $50.

And very nice one's they are too Scott. An' I still want one. (Why am I getting a sense of de-ja-vu here?)
I have to agree with the wear a sporran not a purse set. I was looking at a reasonably priced camera bag and strap once. All zips and pockets in a nice two-tone black/grey nylon. I eyed it with a "could I-couldn't I, should I-shouldn't I" frame of mind.
My Wife jumped in with a "I know what you are thinking and NO!" before turning and walking away. I concluded I needed to " 'ave a word wi' meeself". It would have looked like someone had nicked my camera.
