Hi Andy,
Have you thought of posting a kilt ahead and picking it up when you finally arrive in Scotland?

I have used this method for Christmas and birthday presents when I didn't want them arriving at my front door when I was at work.
Regards

I have not yet worn Utilikilts in Scotland, but have done so extensively otherwise. On trains, buses and planes - four return Atlantic crossing with no problems - to dinners, concerts and other events. There have been many comments, but always favourable. Why should Scottish reaction be different?

I think it comes to the fact that tartan kilts are a Scottish tradition, and the Scots don't tend to recognise contemporary kilts as kilts.
I have a camo print box pleated man's skirt by Midas. I've worn it out and about in Midas' home town of Manchester England and also worn it at least three times in London. In Manchester and London nobody gave a second glance, apart from a few tourists who wanted to photograph the Scotsman in his kilt, though it usually turns a few heads when I wear it here in Scotland.

I've got no advice on which kilt to wear, or whether to wear a kilt at all, but I just wanted to say I'm jealous! I'd love to do a backpacking trip around Scotland, and one of these days maybe I will.
Be sure to post pics and a good write-up of the journey!

QFT. Actually, you are leaving the Utilikilt's home country.

LOL....we've been watching Monarch Of The Glen on the streaming video thing and there was a scene in one episode (season two, for those who care...) where Archie, in a kilt, is standing next to Fergal who's wearing what had to be the baggiest pair of khaki camp shorts I've ever seen. Turned to my wife and said, "...you have to look close to see that Fergal's wearing shorts and not a kilt, eh?" I suppose that in that scene and for that character, a utilikilt would've been appropriate but apparently, from what our Scottish members are saying, they're either unknown or disdained in Scotland proper.

Weather it's Scotland USA Argentina or whatever part of the world are we not determined to wear the kilt and to continue to light fires of kilt wanting by those who see us? Wear them proud and remind all (without words) that kilts are coming. Weather they like it or not.

As Jock pointed out, you'll maybe get some raised eyebrows and comments. But even being a native Scot and wearing a traditional Kilt in Scotland, I STILL got some eejits making comments.
Wear what you're comfortable in and be polite and easygoing to any comments or questions you get. Don't take the negative comments personally, since you have to consider the source.
As far as midgies, they are FAR worse that mosquitoes. They are verrry small and hang about in clouds so you can't hear them coming or just swat them away. Take along some strong insect repellent and be ready for them to ignore it and bite you anyway.

No, that is a good suggestion... I have also thought about buying a kilt while in Edinburgh. That may well become another thread where I seek advice of who to buy from.

Whatever you decide Andy I am sure you will have a great time here and if I can be of any small assistance then do please ask. You never know we may even bump into each other and I will be delighted to buy you a dram.
