In the course of a year, I go to, at best, 1 white tie event. However, I do manage a reasonable number of black tie functions. Here's my code, yours may differ:
Diced/tartan hose - essential
Fly plaid - never!
Buckle shoes - nice, if you have them
Jabot etc - better suited to white tie
Dirks - only if you fear or hate someone else there
