I am a girl, and basically, wanted a mini skirt in tartan with the pleating, kilt inspired. The kilt skirt is how the makers described what I ordered. I didn't want a traditional skirt, as I see on the tartan websites, it's simply too hot for such a thing down here and I have absolutely no place to wear it; a mini skirt, however, is perfect.

:-( I wish I had found this page first, as I've already ordered the skirt and paid. But I'm also hoping that my worries are going to be unfounded, and come May, I'll have a lovely skirt.

As for cost, since I've seen it mentioned here, it was 170 for the whole thing, shipped. If the fabric is 100 a yard, which, is what I was told was needed, plus 70 for labor, I felt was reasonable. I'll have to take a look at USA Kilts, as suggested above.

My wife wears kilted skirts of varying lengths. She likes sportkilts for active wear and Celtic Croft for kilted skirts: http://www.kilts-n-stuff.com/ladies-...d-mini-skirts/

BTW the cloth is not $100 a yard unless they are ordering it from a reseller (and an expensive one at that.)

Tartan retails for around $65. (even custom woven cloth.)

And of course any kiltmaker worth their salt selling kilts will obtain their cloth from the manufacturer at a much better price (usually roughly half of retail.)

Now the cloth in your skirt may cost $100 but for what you described I don't imagine they could possibly use more than 2 yards of double width cloth which still means there's a 50% disparity roughly between their quote and reality (unless they are obtaining their cloth retail which is rather unintelligent for someone trying to make money.)

The fabric shouldn't be 100 (I'm assuming USA dollars) a yard unless it's some kind of serious custom weave and you're only having enough for one kilt done. (If you look around the forum, you'll see a couple of threads where folks are getting together to have some yardage custom woven and are getting as many people to throw in and bring the cost down owing to the volume of the order...a common practice here.) I just priced three yards double width from someone the other day and it came out to, like, $125 shipped, so the actual material shouldn't be that costly.

Wasn't there a tutorial from AlanH on doing a ladies kilt that went along with his Xkilt plans...I just did a quick look-around and can't find it, though...

Hope that your purchase is going to be all that you hope. Be warned, though, that many of us have gone on and acquired more than one kilt....some have gone on to acquire dozens.

Don't overlook the possibility of getting one in the PV material in the future if temperatures are gonna be an issue. This is great stuff and is widely held as the wool alternative and has been the answer to many a kilt wearer in the Southern and Southwestern States prayers.

    Enjoy!

    Best

Kilt4beer, I think what Nighthawk means--and this was my experience with them--their kilts look as good as, if not better than, many other's made-to-measure kilts on the website. But when you get them they're more like sweatpants with pleats. They're universal fit, meaning they universally don't fit anyone very well. Their customer service is good, but the product is sub-par. I bought one kilt from them and can't recommend them. Spend the extra $20 and get a USAK casual...much better product, and it will fit you because it's made for you.
