A few weeks ago I was at Lowes (a big box building supply type store) here in Des Moines, IA when an employee said "Oh, MacGregor tartan?" Shocked, I asked her how did you know that? She's from out east and and just knew. Surprised me!

The reason it is so unusual that someone in Arizona would recognize the Arizona tartan is because there are so few Arizona tartan kilts out and about. There may be a few at the Caledonian Society. The only other one I've ever seen was Craig's He had his custom woven and sewn through STM. It took me YEARS for Kathy Lare to get permission from Dr. Phil Smith (the designer) and she knows him well. I had mine custom woven through
Dalgliesh to Dr. Smith's specifications.

I've never seen the AZ tartan look that bright! Was it just the lighting, camera flash, or is there really that much color difference between your kilts?

And Ron, how are you doing after a few days of chemo? Any good news from the doc? Did you whip that thing yet?:buttkick:

Dr. Smith also designed the Utah (Centennial) Tartan, which I have never seen in a kilt. Although, to tell the truth, I haven't really been to Highland games or other Scottish events in Utah. I don't understand why he would be hesitant to allow his tartans to be reproduced, especially when some of them are official state symbols. If he is a tartan weaver, I would understand it if he requires his tartans to be woven by him rather than a competitor, but I don't understand the point of designing (and registering) a tartan and then not allowing it to be woven by anybody.

The only thing that makes sense to me at the moment is that maybe he doesn't care for the liberties the tartan mills sometimes take with colors and thread counts. I think the various tartan registers are succeeding in establishing more uniformity—at least in the newly-registered tartans, and at least in the area of thread counts. Colors are still often open to interpretation, but I'm sure plenty of Utahns would be willing to order tartan cloth from, say, Dalgliesh in the exact colors specified by Dr. Smith.
